French-based digital reading platform, YouScribe, has embarked on a mission to broaden its global footprint and foster cultural connections through the launch of its multilingual digital library services in Ghana. In partnership with Digital Virgo and MTN, YouScribe aims to provide Ghanaian readers with unparalleled access to a rich catalogue of digital content spanning various genres and formats.
The expansion into Ghana represents a significant stride for YouScribe, signalling the platform’s commitment to offering diverse reading experiences to audiences worldwide. With an extensive collection of nearly 200,000 English-language eBooks, alongside a plethora of press titles, audiobooks, and comic books, YouScribe seeks to cater to the diverse literary preferences of Ghanaian readers.
To ensure the platform resonates with the Ghanaian audience, YouScribe has collaborated closely with local publishers, including Adaex Edu, Sub-Saharan Publishers, and the African Books Collective. This collaboration facilitates the curation of content that reflects the cultural nuances and interests of Ghanaian readers, thereby enhancing the overall reading experience.
Juan Pirlot de Corbion, Founder and CEO of YouScribe, views the launch in Ghana as a pivotal moment in the platform’s mission to bridge cultures through literature. He asserts, “The launch of YouScribe in Ghana is an important and ambitious step in our aspiration to connect cultures through a multilingual digital library featuring authors from all over the continent.”
In a move to make the platform accessible to a wide audience, YouScribe offers a subscription model at a nominal daily fee of GH₵ 0.75 (approximately US$0.06), granting users unlimited access to the diverse digital catalogue.
Ghana now joins South Africa as the second English-speaking country to embrace YouScribe’s offerings, further expanding the platform’s global presence. Currently operational in approximately 11 Francophone African nations, including Tunisia, Senegal, Ivory Coast, and Mali, YouScribe continues to champion literacy and cultural exchange across the continent.
The rise of local authors leveraging digital platforms to share their narratives has significantly contributed to the growth of the ePublishing market in Ghana. Statista projects that the country’s ePublishing market will generate revenue of US$35.49 million in 2024, with a projected market volume of US$40.02 million by 2027.
Renaud Ganascia, Digital Virgo’s Africa Head of Sales, underscores the social and societal impact of YouScribe’s platform, affirming the company’s commitment to collaborating with MTN and YouScribe to reach a broad spectrum of mobile customers across Africa.
Against the backdrop of Ghana’s burgeoning smartphone penetration and internet usage, YouScribe’s expansion into the country holds promise for fostering a culture of digital reading and literacy. With 99.7% of Internet users in Ghana owning smartphones and an internet penetration rate of approximately 70% as of January 2024, the stage is set for YouScribe to make a meaningful impact in the country’s literary landscape.
