Village Capital has invested $350,000 into two Ghanaian startups, marking the first deployment from its Africa Ecosystem Catalysts Facility, a fund designed to support early-stage companies building essential services across the continent. The capital comes from the $4 million facility launched in July 2025 in partnership with the Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, with a focus on startups improving economic mobility and climate resilience through locally grounded models.

Under the latest deployment, the fund has committed $200,000 to Rivia Clinics and $150,000 to VDL Fulfilment, using a mix of convertible debt and performance-linked financing. Rivia will expand its clinic network, strengthen sales operations, and scale virtual care services, while VDL will invest in fleet expansion and warehouse infrastructure to improve fulfilment capacity. The investment comes as funding from development finance institutions slows across Africa, signalling that early-stage startups delivering essential services continue to attract capital despite tighter conditions.

Local Ecosystem Partners and Expansion Plans

The facility works through locally-led Entrepreneur Support Organisations (ESOs) that provide mentorship, funding access, and investor readiness support, helping surface startups that may fall outside traditional venture capital pipelines. Village Capital selected partners across Ghana, Nigeria, and Tanzania, including Reach for Change, Africa Fintech Foundry, Fate Foundation, Anza Entrepreneurs, and Ennovate Ventures. In Ghana, Reach for Change and Innovation Spark helped shape the investment pipeline. Since its founding in 2009, Village Capital has mobilised over $7 billion for about 1,800 startups, with the Ghana deployment marking the first in a planned series of investments across Nigeria and Tanzania.

Kenya's startup market has produced some big funding rounds. It has also produced some expensive failures. Sendy, Copia, Gro Intelligence, KOKO Networks, MarketForce, Lipa Later, iProcure, Kune, Bonto, Mobius Motors and Notify Logistics all raised significant amounts of money before shutting down, entering administration or going through liquidation. Together, the companies raised more than $500
