The new technologies target rail, roads, ports and airports, with a focus on improving operations and reducing delays. Huawei has introduced 12 transport solutions for South Africa, adding new technologies for rail, road traffic, ports and aviation as transport operators come under pressure to improve efficiency and make better use of existing infrastructure. The company unveiled the solutions at the Smart Transportation Summit in Johannesburg during Huawei South Africa Connect 2026.

Four areas of focus

Huawei grouped the new solutions into four parts of the transport sector. For rail, Huawei introduced systems that support train communications, scheduling, station operations and maintenance. The company said the technologies can help operators monitor networks more effectively and identify maintenance issues before they affect services. Its road transport offering includes traffic management tools that use cameras, artificial intelligence and drones to monitor traffic, respond to incidents and adjust traffic signals as conditions change. Huawei also launched technologies for ports that bring operational data together, giving operators a clearer picture of cargo movements, security and day to day activities. For airports, Huawei developed tools that improve ground operations, shorten aircraft turnaround times and help coordinate airport services more efficiently.

Better visibility across transport networks

Speaking at the summit, Huawei South Africa Chief Technology Officer Sam Tang said many transport operators still struggle with disconnected systems that limit the flow of information. He pointed to delays at ports, traffic congestion and maintenance challenges as examples of where better access to real-time data could help operators respond more quickly and improve planning. Tang said Huawei wants to give transport operators better visibility across their networks so they can make faster decisions and reduce operational bottlenecks.

Growing investment in transport technology

Transport operators are increasingly adopting digital technologies to improve existing infrastructure instead of relying only on large capital projects. Huawei said its latest solutions run on a common cloud and connectivity platform, allowing different transport systems to share information more easily. The company says more than 100 ports, over 210 airports and airlines, and rail and road networks in several countries already use its transport technologies. Whether South African operators adopt these solutions will depend on their investment plans and infrastructure priorities. Even so, the launch highlights the growing role technology companies are playing in helping modernise the country’s transport sector.
