Eskom Expo Empowers Future Scientists Through National Regional Science Fairs

The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, South Africa’s premier platform for young innovators, will soon host a series of Regional Science Fairs in 35 regions across the country. These events give school learners from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to showcase their innovative ideas, scientific research, and problem-solving skills on a competitive and inspiring platform. The initiative continues to play a crucial role in developing the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators.

This year’s participants have been pre-selected after engaging in a range of preparatory activities. These included skills-building workshops and mandatory district expos, where they received expert guidance. More than 17,500 learners presented their research projects during these stages.

STEMI as a National Development Priority

Acting CEO of the Eskom Development Foundation, Ms Mologadi Motshele, emphasized the strategic importance of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and innovation (STEMI) in supporting South Africa’s growth, innovation capacity, and long-term sustainability.

Empowering Future Problem-Solvers

“By cultivating interest and excellence in STEMI from an early age,” said Motshele, “the Eskom Expo contributes to developing individual potential while supporting broader economic and social development goals. These learners are the future problem-solvers who will tackle issues like energy, climate change, healthcare, and food security.”

Building Research and Communication Skills

At the Regional Science Fairs, learners will have opportunities to interact with their peers, educators, and STEMI professionals. These engagements aim to enhance critical thinking, research methodology, and presentation skills.

Awards to Recognise Excellence in Science and Innovation

Participants stand to win a range of awards including:

• Best Female Project
• Best Innovation Project
• Best Energy Project
• Best Development Project

These awards are intended to encourage excellence and reward impactful research.

A Gateway to National and International Recognition

Eskom Expo Executive Director, Parthy Chetty, highlighted the value of the regional fairs: “These events are the first step in helping young scientists engage with professionals meaningfully. We wish all participants success and encourage them to keep refining their projects.”

With over 6,000 projects expected across the country, top-performing learners will qualify for the Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF) taking place at Emperors Palace Conference Centre in Kempton Park from 6 to 10 October 2025. ISF participants will compete for prizes, bursaries, and opportunities to represent South Africa at international science fairs in the USA, Asia, Europe, and Africa.

 Judges and Professional Involvement

Professionals are invited to serve as judges at upcoming regional science fairs. Eskom Expo seeks experts in 1. Engineering 2. Medicine 3. Veterinary science 4. Education 5. Research 6. Science and IT

Teachers can earn SACE Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points, while scientists registered with SACNASP will also earn CPD credits. Other professionals may gain credit through their respective professional bodies.

The Eskom Expo continues to stand out as a great platform to ignite curiosity, nurture talent, and provide life-changing opportunities for young scientists across South Africa. While learners take their ideas from regional platforms to the national and global stage, the Expo also stands out as a testament to the power of education, mentorship, and innovation in shaping a brighter, future.
