Africa Deep Tech Foundation Launches Offline AI Challenge for African Developers

The Africa Deep Tech Foundation (ADTF) has launched the Africa Deep Tech Challenge (ADTC) 2026, inviting developers, researchers and engineers to build artificial intelligence models that can run entirely offline on standard laptops. Known as the Laptop LLM Challenge, this year’s competition focuses on developing language models that operate within an 8GB RAM limit without relying on cloud computing. The challenge aims to encourage AI solutions that can function on the hardware already available to many businesses, schools and public institutions across Africa.
According to ADTF Convener Emeka Afigbo, many AI tools depend on continuous internet connectivity and cloud infrastructure, making them less practical in environments where connectivity, power supply and computing resources remain limited.
He said the challenge is intended to demonstrate that secure and practical AI applications can run directly on everyday laptops used in sectors such as healthcare, education and financial services.
Addressing Local Infrastructure Constraints
Many AI platforms are designed for environments with reliable internet access, cloud infrastructure and affordable computing resources. Across many parts of Africa, however, high API costs, intermittent connectivity and power disruptions continue to limit the adoption of cloud-based AI services.
The challenge encourages participants to design models that work efficiently under these constraints, enabling organisations to deploy AI applications without depending on constant internet access.
Funding and Industry Support
The initiative is supported by the Nduzi Foundation, AI Africa XPrize, Future Africa, Accelerate Africa, Udu Technologies (Africa GPU Hub) and Crowther Labs. Participating teams will compete for a prize pool of more than $20,000. Winning teams will also take part in a six-month scale-up programme designed to help commercialise their AI models.
AI Africa XPrize founder Oji Udezue said developing advanced AI that runs offline on standard hardware is an important technical challenge for the continent. He added that successful teams will also be considered for participation in the organisation’s $10 million AI Africa XPrize competition.
Future Africa Founding Partner Iyinoluwa Aboyeji said building AI for local hardware constraints presents a significant commercial opportunity. He noted that many African developers work with limited computing resources, requiring them to design solutions that are efficient while addressing practical local challenges.
