Tech Talk – Biodegradable Plastic Development in Africa with Fortis X

In this episode of Tech Talk, I chatted to Nick De Beer, founder of Fortis X. We discussed his company’s journey from producing containers and other plastic goods for the medical field to developing biodegradable plastic solutions.

Initially involved in producing medical devices, De Beer noticed the significant plastic waste generated in the industry. This realization, coupled with environmental concerns observed during personal experiences, led to the pursuit of sustainable alternatives.

Fortis X focused on creating biodegradable bottles made from sugarcane, a venture that required extensive research and collaboration with chemical engineers. Despite initial failures, the company successfully launched Africa’s first biodegradable bottle, gaining certification from the European Standards Authority.

The product, free from petroleum byproducts, is designed to prevent microplastic pollution and has expanded into various industries, including water, juice, and dairy. Fortis X’s manufacturing is based in South Africa, with strong ties to local sugarcane growers, and the company is exploring export opportunities, particularly in Rwanda.

De Beer emphasises the need for global collaboration to address the plastic waste crisis and is optimistic about the future applications of their biodegradable materials in diverse sectors.
