South African energy startup Wetility has introduced a new interactive lookup tool that enables users to search their municipality and access a detailed view of local power outage patterns. The tool provides insights such as average outage duration, monthly trends, and how each area compares against the national average.
Expanding Its Role in South Africa’s Energy Transition
Wetility is among the fastest-growing solar energy companies in South Africa, offering smart energy solutions for homes and businesses. Its integrated platform combines energy-as-a-service, fintech infrastructure, and AI-driven data analytics to deliver an affordable multi-utility solution with no upfront costs for customers.
Alongside the tool, the company has released the Wetility 2025 Energy Resilience Report, a publicly available dataset highlighting major differences in grid reliability across municipalities. The findings reveal a wide gap in performance, with some areas experiencing outages of less than two hours on average, while others face disruptions lasting more than 24 hours.
Municipality-Level Insights Made Accessible
The newly launched tool allows residents to explore these differences directly by entering their municipality, giving them access to breakdowns of outage duration, seasonal and monthly trends, and comparisons with national averages.
According to Franta Pour, Chief Commercial Officer at Wetility, the data highlights the importance of understanding electricity reliability at a local level rather than treating it as a uniform national issue. He noted that many municipalities are under significant strain due to ageing infrastructure, cable theft, and revenue collection challenges, which are reflected in the uneven reliability patterns across the country.
Pour added that the dataset is designed to improve transparency and decision-making, giving municipalities, businesses, and households clearer visibility into local energy conditions so they can plan and respond more effectively.
