South African Startup Aura Integrates Google Maps Into Emergency Services
South African emergency response technology company Aura has integrated Google Maps Platform into its platform. The move is designed to improve response times and location accuracy across its operations. The integration will be rolled out across Aura’s responder applications, customer platforms and dispatch systems in South Africa, Kenya, the United Kingdom and the United States.
According to Aura, the platform uses Google’s live traffic and navigation data to identify the nearest available responder. It also determines the fastest route to an incident.
Improving Emergency Response
Aura Chief Technology Officer Grant Macwilliam said mapping plays a central role in the company’s platform, which led Aura to replace its previous mapping technology with Google Maps Platform.
“Our goal around bringing this update to our platform was to introduce a single source of truth that we can really trust,” Macwilliam said.
The company said the integration improves route planning by using live traffic conditions, helping responders reach emergencies more quickly. It also gives users more accurate responder tracking and more reliable estimated arrival times.
Macwilliam said the integration supports Aura’s international expansion by ensuring responders, controllers and partners work from the same location data.
“As we continue expanding across multiple international markets, it is essential that responders, controllers, partners and end users operate from the same highly accurate location intelligence source,” he said.
Supporting International Growth
The integration was delivered through a partnership with Localyse, a Google Maps Premier Partner. Aura now operates in South Africa, Kenya, the United Kingdom and the United States, with the new mapping capability providing a consistent navigation and dispatch platform across its international operations.
In 2025, Aura raised €13.5 million (about R282 million) in a Series B funding round led by Cathay AfricInvest Innovation Fund and Partech. The funding is supporting the company’s expansion into the United States, with further growth planned for Australia, New Zealand, China and other parts of Europe and Asia.
Aura says its platform has generated more than 67,000 emergency alerts and records an average response time of around 10 minutes. The company also says its responder network covers approximately 94% of South Africa and estimates its technology has helped save more than 8,000 lives by improving access to emergency response services.
