Sony has expanded its professional audio lineup with the launch of the IER-M500 in-ear monitors (IEMs), designed specifically for musicians, performers, and monitor engineers who demand reliable, accurate sound on stage or in the studio. Priced at a competitive R1,799 in South Africa (only available from October 2026), these new universal-fit IEMs aim to bridge the gap between entry-level consumer options and expensive custom-moulded monitors.

Developed in collaboration with monitoring engineers, the IER-M500 prioritises secure fit, high noise isolation, and durable stage-ready construction — critical factors for live performance environments where movement, sweat, and ambient noise can compromise the listening experience.

Key Innovations and Design

Sony’s engineering focus is evident in the IER-M500’s attention to real-world stage demands. The monitors feature a secure, stable fit achieved through original fitting supporters, four sizes of noise-isolating earpieces, and a thin polyurethane wall that enhances isolation while improving comfort during long sessions. Flexible ear hangers and clips provide additional security, allowing performers to move freely without worrying about the monitors dislodging.

A fully sealed structure with a large acoustic chamber delivers excellent passive noise isolation, blocking out loud stage environments so artists can hear cues clearly at lower volumes — protecting hearing while maintaining clarity. The dynamic driver produces deep, controlled bass, with optimised internals refining high-frequency reproduction for accurate monitoring across the frequency range. The IER-M500 supports high-resolution audio, offering wide bandwidth suitable for detailed, professional-grade listening.

Sony has also incorporated sustainability elements, using 35% circular material in the product’s plastics to reduce virgin fossil-based plastic usage.
