Samsung Launches Galaxy Z TriFold, Its First Multi-Folding Device
Samsung Electronics has introduced its first multi-folding smartphone, expanding its presence in a part of the mobile market where competition continues to sharpen. The new Galaxy Z TriFold strengthens Samsung’s position as Chinese manufacturers advance their own foldable devices. Analysts still warn that high prices and complex manufacturing may keep the category small for now.
The TriFold costs ₩3.6 million (US$2 440) and unfolds into a 253mm display built from three connected panels. The expanded screen is roughly 25% larger than the Galaxy Z Fold7, giving Samsung a new form factor for early adopters and productivity-focused users.
Positioning and Market Expectations
Alex Lim, Samsung Electronics executive vice president and head of Korea sales and marketing, said the company expects continued growth in the foldable segment. He noted that the TriFold could encourage stronger interest among users who want a larger workspace or multi-panel flexibility.
Lim explained that Samsung designed the device for customers who specifically want a multi-folding phone, not for the broad mass market base. Samsung will launch the TriFold in South Korea on 12 December and then release it in China, Singapore, Taiwan and the United Arab Emirates later in the year.
The device includes Samsung’s largest battery in its flagship line and supports superfast charging that reaches 50% in 30 minutes. Lim also said rising memory and component costs forced Samsung to make difficult pricing decisions.
Analysts See the TriFold as a Technology Demonstrator
Market analysts describe the TriFold as a showcase of Samsung’s engineering and what they can do rather than a high-volume model. Ryu Young-ho, senior analyst at NH Investment & Securities, said the device is Samsung’s first commercial trifold and therefore still in an early, experimental stage. He compared this with the Galaxy Z Fold line, which has evolved over seven generations and benefits from improved production efficiency. According to Ryu, the TriFold may still face durability and refinement questions that the market will judge over time.
Competition in foldables continues to intensify. Huawei introduced the industry’s first three-way folding phone in September, and industry watchers expect Apple to join the segment next year. Despite growing interest, analysts believe the market will remain small due to premium pricing and the difficulty of producing foldable displays at scale.
Foldable smartphones account for less than 2% of global shipments this year and will stay under 3% by 2027, according to Counterpoint Research. Market share also shifts quickly with each product cycle Samsung’s share jumped to 64% in the third quarter, up from 9% the previous quarter, illustrating how launch timing shapes leadership in this category.
