At a high-energy launch event in Johannesburg yesterday, Sage officially introduced Sage AI to South African businesses, positioning it as the practical answer to a pressing problem facing small and mid-sized enterprises (SMBs) across Africa and the Middle East. Jordaan Burger, Managing Director of Sage AME, and Sophia Adhami, Senior Director of Product Office (joining from London), delivered a clear message: Sage AI is not another hype-filled tool, rather, it is a trusted, workflow-embedded artificial intelligence designed to give business owners their time back while delivering insights they can actually rely on.

African SMBs are ambitious, resilient, and proven survivors. They have navigated COVID-19, load-shedding, and political uncertainty with remarkable determination. Yet owners remain trapped in daily drudgery: invoicing, chasing payments, double-checking systems, and submitting compliance returns. “They’re not building their businesses,” Burger observed. The recent increase in the VAT registration threshold from R1 million to R2.3 million offers breathing room, but Burger warned against using it as an excuse to delay technology adoption. “Compliance is the absolute minimum outcome. Technology should be used to get ahead, to thrive, to beat your competitors.”

Giving Back Valuable Time to Pressed Business Owners

Sage AI’s core promise is simple and powerful: it gives time back without replacing people. “SAGE AI is there to give you time back. It’s not there to replace people,” Burger stressed. The solution is deeply embedded (into the Sage eco-system), not bolted on, into Sage’s existing finance, HR, and payroll platforms. In sectors where “getting the numbers mostly right is not right enough,” trust is everything. Decades of Sage’s institutional knowledge in accounting and payroll, combined with nearly ten years of AI development, ensure outputs are reliable rather than experimental.

Burger made two critical distinctions that set Sage apart from the flood of generic AI claims. First, “AI and AI agents will not replace software. They will benefit from software like we humans do.” The software provides the structured foundation that makes AI trustworthy. Second, Sage is evolving from a pure “system of record” — excellent at accurate transactions, reporting, compliance, and audit trails, into a “system of insights” that delivers data-driven strategic advantage. “We want to give businesses time back. Burger also stressed, “We want to give them more insight to drive their businesses forward”. “We want to give them that strategic differentiating advantage”. “We don’t want to take away control.” “We want to give them more control.”

Intelligence Engine

Sophia Adhami then took attendees through the architecture that makes this possible. Sage AI is the intelligence engine, trained on real financial, accounting, payroll, and HR data rather than generic internet content. Three principles underpin everything:

  1. It is driven by genuine customer insight — real workflows and feedback shape features that deliver measurable productivity gains.
  2. It is trustworthy — transparent, ethical, and built on domain expertise while fully compliant with global standards including the EU AI Act.
  3. It removes admin and returns time — automating the tasks owners dread so they can focus on growth.

Globally, Sage AI has already saved customers 50 million hours. One single-parent business owner used the reclaimed time to spend more moments with family giving a powerful reminder that saved hours translate into better lives, not necessarily just better businesses. Accuracy is non-negotiable: customers prefer no prediction over one they cannot trust. Data handling is tightly controlled so each business effectively works with its own tailored AI model.

The four pillars are clear:

  • Sage Copilot provides a consistent, intuitive interaction layer across every Sage product.
  • Sage AI is the core intelligence engine.
  • AI Agents act as autonomous doers, automating end-to-end tasks such as month-end closes.
  • The Sage Platform supplies the secure, scalable infrastructure that makes trusted AI possible at enterprise level.

Human-First Philosophy

A guiding “human-first” philosophy ensures AI augments rather than replaces people. “Humans are always in control,” Adhami explained. Users can set as many checkpoints as they wish, maintaining full oversight.

What makes Sage different is the “Copilot factory” — a repeatable, secure development process that accelerates deployment while leveraging decades of structured accounting data for context-rich insights. Customer feedback slides showed real-world impact: automation first, then AI applied precisely to the admin tasks people hate most. One testimonial after another highlighted time saved, errors reduced, and strategic focus regained.

Trust is embedded at every layer in their new AI platform. The system is transparent, compliant, and equipped with safeguards against bias and hallucinations. It is fine-tuned on Sage’s proprietary accounting data for exceptional accuracy. An innovative “AI Trust Label” and importantly available directly within the existing Sage products, which functions similar to a nutrition label, letting users instantly see transparency levels, compliance status, and safeguards for any AI feature they are using.

Benefits and Capabilities

AI Agents deliver three powerful capabilities: continuous accounting (real-time data to eliminate traditional month-end closes), continuous assurance (ongoing monitoring for accuracy and compliance), and proactive insights (highlighting risks and opportunities). The monthly Close Agent alone has slashed month-end cycles by up to 90% for many users, and turning days of work into mere minutes for users.

The underlying Sage Platform also breaks down data silos, connecting every customer to a unified ecosystem of data, core services, AI workflows, and business processes. Compliance tasks such as e-invoicing become embedded services, handled automatically with global expertise so owners never have to worry about mandates.

In a personal conversation after the presentation, Burger shared two reassuring details for South African users. First, there is currently no additional charge for the AI assistant. While some advanced features may carry a fee in future, the core intelligence is included today. Secondly, Sage’s substantial investment in AI development has had no negative impact on the company’s bottom line with earnings continue to grow strongly. This stands in stark contrast to many organisations that have poured capital into AI without seeing returns.

For South African SMBs, the upside is immediate and substantial.

Time liberation

Owners regain hours previously lost to repetitive admin. The 50 million global hours saved, combined with local examples of 90% faster month-end closes, translate into capacity for revenue-generating activities — acquiring customers, launching new products, or simply planning strategic growth

Accuracy and risk reduction

In finance and payroll, where mistakes carry financial penalties and reputational damage, instant AI-driven checking and auditing provide confidence. Numbers are verified against decades of domain rules before they reach the user.

Actionable insights

Data that once sat trapped in reports now surfaces as clear opportunities and early warnings. Decision-making shifts from reactive to proactive, giving businesses a genuine competitive edge in a fast-moving environment.

Better work-life balance

As one customer story illustrated, reclaimed time can be reinvested in family, health, or personal goals — improving owner well-being and long-term sustainability.

Cost-effective innovation

With no immediate extra subscription cost and proven ROI, Sage AI delivers enterprise-grade intelligence at SMB-friendly economics. Businesses can adopt responsibly without straining cash flow.

Seamless integration

Because the AI lives inside the software SMBs already trust, adoption is frictionless. Users do not need new logins, new training, or new systems — the intelligence simply enhances what they already use daily.

Positive Outlook for Users

In an economy where SME’s are the engine of employment and growth, Sage AI arrives at the perfect moment. It does not ask owners to abandon proven processes; it supercharges them. As Burger summarised, the winners in this new era will be businesses that understand where to deploy trusted AI and partner with vendors who have spent decades perfecting the fundamentals.

Sage AI is more than a a shiny new AI feature, it is potentially a bridge from survival to thriving. It holds the potential to turn resilient South African entrepreneurs into strategic business leaders equipped with time, insight, and confidence.

Africa is getting more Big Tech investment, but the basics are still holding it back

Google, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon and Starlink are putting more money into Africa's digital infrastructure. Subsea cables are reaching more parts of the continent, satellite internet is expanding and cloud companies are adding services for African customers. For businesses that have spent years dealing with unreliable connections, that is useful. There is still a problem underneath
