OpenAI Introduces ChatGPT Health

OpenAI has launched a new ChatGPT Health tab, offering users a dedicated space to ask health-related questions, upload medical records and connect wellness apps such as Apple Health and MyFitnessPal.

The move formalises one of ChatGPT’s most widely used functions. According to OpenAI, more than 230 million people globally ask health- and wellness-related questions on the platform each week, making health information one of ChatGPT’s most common use cases.

Practical Uses and Regulatory Context

ChatGPT Health is designed to support everyday health-related tasks, including understanding recent test results, preparing for doctor appointments, managing diet and exercise routines, and comparing insurance options based on individual healthcare patterns.

The launch comes as regulators reassess oversight of health technologies. On Tuesday, US Food and Drug Administration commissioner Marty Makary said the agency would reduce regulation of wearable devices and software aimed at supporting healthy lifestyles. Makary has previously said ChatGPT is a product that should be encouraged, while cautioning against overstating safety concerns.

Privacy Safeguards and Rollout Plans

OpenAI said ChatGPT Health operates as a separate environment with enhanced privacy protections for sensitive data. Conversations within the Health tab are not used to train the company’s foundation models.

The company plans to roll out ChatGPT Health more broadly in the coming weeks, making it available to all users on web and iOS platforms.
