South African consumers can soon anticipate the official arrival of the Nothing Phone as the smartphone brand prepares for its local launch next month, according to information obtained by TechCentral.
Cernotech, a South African distributor, has inked a deal to introduce Nothing Technology’s latest offerings in the country, including the flagship Nothing Phone 2 and the midrange Nothing Phone 2a.
Nothing Technology is a UK-based consumer electronics brand founded by Carl Pei, co-founder of OnePlus, and it has garnered considerable attention globally. Investors in Nothing include prominent figures like Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, Twitch co-founder Kevin Lin, and YouTube personality Casey Neistat.
Philip Goodwin, Cernotech’s product lead, revealed in an interview with TechCentral that the Nothing Phone 2 and Nothing Phone 2a are slated to hit the South African market by early June. These devices will be available for purchase both online and through at least one of the country’s major mobile operators, with negotiations nearing completion.
While Cernotech is yet to finalize plans for the introduction of Nothing Technology’s earbuds in South Africa, Goodwin indicated that they are likely to be sold exclusively online.
In terms of after-sales service, the company intends to establish service centres in South Africa eventually. Initially, however, they will adopt a “swap for repair” model, allowing consumers to exchange faulty devices for replacements should any issues arise.
Specializing in distributing niche mobile brands, Cernotech has previously introduced the Cat ruggedized smartphone brand to South Africa. Goodwin described Nothing as a “challenger brand” in the mobile market, offering premium features at competitive prices compared to leading brands.
The Nothing Phone 2 boasts a 6.7-inch OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, dual 50-megapixel rear cameras, a 32MP selfie camera, 5G and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity, an under-display fingerprint scanner, and a 4,700mAh battery. On the other hand, the 2a model features a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro 5G SoC, dual 50MP rear cameras, a 32MP selfie camera, and a 5,000mAh battery.
Both phones run on Nothing OS, an operating system based on Android, offering three years of Android updates and four years of security updates. A standout feature of the Nothing Phone is the “Glyph Interface,” which allows users to interact with the device through customizable light patterns and sounds when placed face down.
