Nigeria’s satellite internet market is preparing for a major new entrant. Amazon has received a seven-year landing permit from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The approval clears Project Kuiper to start providing broadband services from February 2026. The NCC said the authorisation follows international regulatory standards. It also supports Nigeria’s plan to widen broadband delivery options as demand rises across homes, businesses and public services.
Licence Scope and Service Categories
The licence allows Amazon Kuiper to run its space segment in Nigeria as part of a global low Earth orbit (LEO) network. Over time, that constellation could scale to 3,236 satellites. Kuiper can offer fixed satellite services, mobile satellite services and earth stations in motion (ESIM). As a result, the service can cover residential and enterprise users. It can also support moving assets across logistics, aviation and maritime transport. In addition, it can serve other infrastructure-heavy operations.
Competitive Pressure on Starlink
Kuiper’s entrance ends Starlink’s near-exclusive hold over Nigeria’s LEO satellite broadband segment. Starlink entered early and built momentum. It now has an estimated subscriber base above 66,000. With Kuiper entering the same category, Nigeria will host direct competition between two global operators. Both bring deep capital, large manufacturing pipelines and advanced satellite platforms. In turn, the contest could reshape pricing, customer service standards and network reach. This may be most visible outside major commercial centres.
Technical Profile and Market Fundamentals
On the technical front, the NCC approval includes Ka-band spectrum. This band supports high-throughput satellite internet. Amazon plans to use 100 MHz channels and is targeting speeds of up to 400 Mbps. At the same time, the company aims to keep user terminals priced for broad uptake. That approach would support scale, rather than limiting the service to premium customers.
Nigeria offers a large addressable market. However, it still struggles with coverage gaps. The country has more than 200 million people. The NCC estimates that over 23 million Nigerians live in unserved or underserved areas. Meanwhile, mobile broadband penetration stood at 50.58% in November 2025. Because LEO satellites operate closer to Earth than traditional satellite systems, they can deliver lower latency. They can also support modern digital use cases such as cloud services, digital finance and real-time business applications.
Enterprise Demand and AWS Integration
Beyond consumer demand, Kuiper could find strong traction in sectors that operate far from fibre routes. It may also appeal in areas with unreliable mobile coverage. Oil and gas assets, mining operations, ports and long-haul transport corridors often require stable connectivity. Yet terrestrial rollout remains expensive or technically difficult in many of these locations.
Amazon’s wider technology stack may strengthen that pitch. The company rebranded Project Kuiper as Amazon LEO in November 2025. It can also link satellite connectivity with Amazon Web Services (AWS). As a result, enterprises could combine access and cloud capability under one ecosystem.
Outlook for Coverage and Competition
For Nigeria, the approval sets up a more competitive satellite broadband market. This will influence how quickly the country can extend reliable internet access. With two global LEO operators now on track to compete, businesses and consumers may gain more choice. They may also see stronger performance benchmarks and wider coverage over the next rollout cycle.
