Nigeria Launches Unified Cloud for Environmental Data Management

Nigeria’s Ministry of Environment has launched the 1Gov Cloud Digitalization Program, a new initiative designed to modernize government services and streamline environmental data management through a single, unified platform.

Reducing Costs and Emissions

“Digitalization is no longer optional; it is a necessity. Through the Galaxy Backbone 1Government Cloud, we are enabling data-driven environmental management, cutting operational costs, and directly reducing carbon emissions,” said Environment Minister Balarabe Abbas Lawal during the launch on Monday, October 26.

The 1Gov Cloud will allow the ministry to gradually migrate its internal systems and databases to a national cloud infrastructure, simplifying the collection, sharing, and analysis of critical environmental information. This includes data on pollution, biodiversity, and waste management, while also improving coordination across the ministry’s various departments.

Part of a Broader Digital Transformation Agenda

This initiative is part of Nigeria’s broader digital transformation agenda, which aims to create a more efficient, transparent, and accessible public administration. By integrating environmental data into a centralized platform, the government is reinforcing its commitment to data-driven policies that can better address the country’s environmental challenges.

In 2024, Nigeria scored 0.5372 out of 1 on the United Nations Online Service Index, which measures the quality and reach of government digital services. This score placed the country above the African average of 0.3862 and close to the global average of 0.5754, showing  Nigeria’s growing leadership in digital governance on the continent.
