Nigerian-founded fintech startup LemFi has received approval from the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority to acquire investment platform Wealth8, opening the door for the startup to expand beyond cross-border payments into wealth management. The acquisition adds investment services to LemFi’s existing portfolio of international money transfers, savings and credit products, broadening its offering for customers living and working across multiple countries.

Founded to simplify cross-border financial services, LemFi serves customers across the United Kingdom, Europe, North America and Australia, with a strong focus on African diaspora communities. The Wealth8 acquisition allows the startup to offer long-term investment products alongside its existing financial services through a single platform.

Moving Beyond Remittances

The acquisition follows LemFi’s continued expansion into broader financial services. In 2025, the startup introduced an Instant Access Savings Account in partnership with ClearBank, allowing customers to earn interest while maintaining access to their funds.

Adding investment products represents the next stage of that strategy as LemFi seeks to support customers beyond money transfers by offering services that help build long-term financial security.

The acquisition enters a market where investment participation remains uneven across the UK. While investing plays an important role in long-term wealth creation, research has shown that many households continue to keep significant savings in cash, with participation particularly low among some migrant and minority communities.

Expanding Financial Access

Wealth8 was established to make investing more accessible through lower investment thresholds and diversified portfolios. Under LemFi, those products will become available to a wider customer base that already uses the startup for international payments and other financial services.

LemFi now serves more than two million customers, giving Wealth8 immediate access to a substantially larger user base than it previously reached independently.

Chief Executive Officer and co-founder Ridwan Olalere said the acquisition reflects the startup’s ambition to support customers throughout their financial journey.

“We started LemFi by helping people send money because that was the most urgent need. But financial progress doesn’t stop at the transfer. This approval allows us to help customers save, access credit and now invest, supporting them as they build long-term financial security wherever they call home,” Olalere said.

The FCA approval also strengthens LemFi’s regulatory position as the startup continues expanding internationally. Alongside licences and approvals across Europe, North America, Australia and several African remittance corridors, the Wealth8 acquisition marks another step in LemFi’s transition from a remittance-focused fintech into a broader digital financial services platform.
