Digital Sovereignty and AI Leadership

Under the patronage of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, GITEX Nigeria reflects Nigeria’s commitment to digital sovereignty and economic transformation. Organized by KAOUN International and supported by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy in collaboration with NITDA, the event will begin in Abuja with a Government Leadership & AI Summit on 1 September.

Minister Hon. Dr. Bosun Tijani emphasized the importance of shifting Nigeria from being a consumer of AI to a net producer of global talent and technology. In addition, he noted, “GITEX Nigeria is our moment to showcase the boldness of our ideas and the depth of our innovation.”

Africa’s Startup Hub

From 3rd to 4th September, the spotlight moves to Lagos. The Eko Hotel Convention Centre will host the Tech Expo & Future Economy Conference, while simultaneously the Landmark Centre will welcome the GITEX Nigeria Startup Festival, which is the largest and most globally diverse investor programme in Nigeria.

Lagos, home to 23 of Nigeria’s 28 fastest-growing companies (Financial Times), offers fertile ground for networking, deal-making, and innovation. Furthermore, the UNDP’s timbuktoo initiative will also be featured, mobilizing public and private capital to support startups addressing global challenges such as climate change and sustainable development.

Global Tech Giants Driving Local Impact

Major technology brands, including IBM, Meta, MTN, AWS, Cisco, and Kaspersky, will showcase innovations, provide infrastructure support, and foster talent development.

IBM, operated by MIBB, reasserted Nigeria as a strategic growth market. Vishnu Taimni, General Manager of IBM, stated, “Indeed, GITEX Nigeria provides a valuable platform to deepen partnerships and co-create technologies that empower industries and communities for the future.”

NITDA Director General Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi emphasized that the event aims to develop world-class AI infrastructure, which promotes scalability, sovereignty, and global competitiveness, while also ensuring inclusive access to technology.

Catalyst for Africa’s Tech Economy

GITEX Nigeria goes beyond a trade show; in fact, it is a catalyst for economic transformation. By uniting policymakers, multinational corporations, investors, and innovators, the event accelerates collaboration across fintech, telecoms, mining, education, and e-commerce.

The focus on talent development is particularly significant for Nigeria’s large youth population. Consequently, training initiatives, AI skill-building programmes, and digital literacy projects will prepare the next generation for high-value tech careers.

Nigeria is moving from a consumer market to a producer of technology, and therefore, is ready to influence trends in AI, green technology, and digital infrastructure.

GITEX Nigeria arrives amid unprecedented attention from international investors, growing public-private partnerships, and record-breaking startup funding. As such, for global companies, it is a gateway to Africa’s fastest-growing economy; similarly, for local businesses, it represents an opportunity to scale, connect with investors, and explore emerging technologies.
