In South Africa, the drive to foster interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields among young learners has led to the development of innovative platforms aimed at igniting curiosity and inspiring future careers in the STEM sector. One such platform is the initiative for launching careers in Science and Technology, which serves as an additional avenue to motivate students and equip them with essential skills in problem-solving, creativity, and computer literacy.

Louise Fouche, who is the Facilitator of Coding and Robotics at Nelson Mandela University, sheds light on their approach to introducing coding to young learners in the Eastern Cape Province. “We start with the basics, treating coding as akin to assembling a puzzle,” she explains. “Through hands-on activities, students gradually build their projects, enabling their codable creations to execute specific actions. This interactive approach to learning fosters engagement and makes the process enjoyable for students.”

Recognizing the diverse learning needs of young children, particularly those who are not yet proficient readers, educators employ creative strategies to facilitate understanding. Fouche elaborates, “We incorporate colours into our teaching methods, leveraging visual cues to aid comprehension. For example, we use blue to symbolize motion, drawing parallels with the vastness of the ocean. By associating colours with specific commands, students can easily grasp concepts and unleash their creativity.”

While introducing coding and robotics into schools poses challenges, especially in underserved areas with limited resources, initiatives such as coding clubs and external competitions play a crucial role in engaging students and fostering interest in STEM subjects.

The Department of Education’s pilot program for coding and robotics in the Eastern Cape reflects a concerted effort to expand access to STEM education. Currently, 186 schools are participating in the program, with plans to scale up to 4,000 schools by 2025. This expansion will be supported by increased resource allocation and ongoing teacher training, ensuring that educators are equipped to deliver quality instruction in coding and robotics.

The spokesperson for the Department of Education, Malibongwe Mtima, emphasizes the significance of the Coding and Robotics program in preparing students for the future. “This initiative, initiated under the Draft Curriculum Statement Policy, aims to address the challenges of implementing a comprehensive coding curriculum,” Mtima states. “With a mediated budget funded through the MST coordination grant, we are laying the foundation for a future-ready workforce equipped with critical digital skills.”
