In a positive spin for Africa’s financial technology ecosystem, Nigerian startup Hizo has successfully secured $100,000 in seed funding to enhance its operations aimed at simplifying cross-border payments across the continent. The investment round, led by a blend of local angel investors and early-stage African venture capitalists, reflects growing confidence in fintech solutions that address Africa’s fragmented payment systems.
Since launching in 2023, Hizo has worked to remove the traditional barriers to intra-African transactions. The startup seeks to make it faster, easier, and more affordable for individuals and businesses to send and receive money between countries. With fresh capital in hand, Hizo intends to scale its operations, strengthen its partner network, and invest further in product development ensuring a seamless user experience.
Tackling Pain Points in Intra-African Payments
Although the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) continues to push for increased intra-African trade, the process of moving money across borders remains challenging. Users consistently encounter high transaction fees, unfavorable exchange rates, and delayed transfers. To address these pain points, Hizo is taking a technology-first approach. By combining multiple payment providers and mobile money operators into one unified platform, Hizo simplifies the process. Users no longer need to worry about complex banking procedures or currency conversion obstacles. As a result, transactions become both faster and more cost-effective.Read more here
CEO and co-founder Chinedu Okoye emphasized this mission, stating, “Our goal is to become the backbone of borderless finance in Africa. With this funding, we can accelerate our efforts to offer reliable, fast, and affordable cross-border payments that empower SMEs, freelancers, and diaspora communities alike.”
Tapping into a Growing Market
Africa’s fintech market ranks among the fastest-growing globally. Several factors rising smartphone usage, a young and digitally savvy population, and limited access to traditional banking continue to drive demand for innovative financial solutions. Moreover, a McKinsey report estimates that Africa’s fintech revenue could reach $30 billion by 2025. Yet, cross-border payments remain largely underserved.
To bridge this gap, Hizo is designing tools for real-time settlement and regulatory compliance across key corridors such as Nigeria-Ghana, Kenya-South Africa, and Senegal-Côte d’Ivoire. Additionally, the startup is developing APIs that integrate seamlessly with third-party platforms like ecommerce sites, gig economy apps, and remittance services thereby expanding its reach and usability.
Strengthening Capacity and Security
Looking ahead, Hizo plans to enter at least five additional African markets over the next year. To support this expansion, its tech team is enhancing the platform’s scalability and data security, while also ensuring compliance with multiple regulatory environments. The seed round will further support marketing and customer acquisition initiatives, including strategic partnerships with local banks, mobile network operators, and fintech firms. As Africa’s digital economy continues to flourish, platforms like Hizo are becoming critical drivers of a more connected and inclusive financial future across the continent for easy money transactions.
