Multiverse, a leading UK-based unicorn renowned for its innovative apprenticeship programs integrating technology skills training, has embarked on an acquisition spree to strengthen its own expertise. The company recently announced its acquisition of Searchlight, a pioneering start-up and recruitment platform leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) technology to identify talent. This strategic move aims to harness Searchlight’s AI capabilities to develop new products and enhance Multiverse’s professional training services.
Euan Blair, Founder and CEO of Multiverse, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, highlighting the synergies between Searchlight’s technology and Multiverse’s mission. “Searchlight’s AI, platform, and exceptional talent will enable us to better assess the skills required within organizations and provide impactful solutions,” stated Blair. By leveraging Searchlight’s technology and talent pool, Multiverse aims to extend its reach and deliver enhanced learning experiences to both companies and individuals.
Searchlight, co-founded by twin sisters Kerry and Anna Wang, boasts an impressive roster of clients, including notable tech companies like Udemy, Zapier, and Talkdesk. While existing contracts will be honoured, Searchlight’s recruitment services will gradually phase out to align with Multiverse’s strategic objectives. This acquisition underscores the pivotal role of AI in reshaping workforce dynamics and educational paradigms, offering more efficient solutions to bridge recruitment gaps and enhance professional training services.
The integration of AI and recruitment has historically posed challenges, with instances of inherent biases in AI algorithms. However, advancements in technology and increased awareness have mitigated such concerns. Kerry Wang, CEO of Searchlight, emphasized the platform’s ability to promote equitable access to economic opportunities, citing its superior matching capabilities compared to traditional interview methods.
As part of the acquisition, Kerry Wang will assume the role of Director of Product at Multiverse, while Anna Wang will lead the AI division. Multiverse, led by Blair, has emerged as a key player in the education and training sector, boasting a diverse clientele encompassing major corporations, government entities, and financial institutions.
While initially recognized for its focus on apprenticeships in burgeoning fields like technology, Multiverse has expanded its offerings to include professional training for employed individuals. With AI-based services already in place, the company is poised to further enhance its platform’s capabilities and solidify its position as a leader in modern workforce development solutions.
Financial details of the acquisition remain undisclosed. However, the Wang sisters’ entrepreneurial journey, coupled with Searchlight’s impressive track record and valuation, underscores the strategic significance of the deal. Notably, Searchlight previously raised significant funding, including a $17 million Series A round in 2021, attracting investments from prominent venture capital firms.
Multiverse, valued at $1.7 billion in 2022, has garnered substantial investor support, including General Catalyst and Lightspeed. This acquisition marks the company’s second strategic move following its acquisition of Eduflow, another Y Combinator-backed start-up, in the previous year.
Investors have expressed optimism regarding the acquisition, highlighting the innovative potential of Searchlight’s technology and its alignment with Multiverse’s vision. Keith Rabois, who led Searchlight’s Series A funding, emphasized the synergy between the two companies and the prospects for future growth and innovation.
