MTN South Africa is making it easier for people to access faster internet by offering 4G smartphones for just $5. This effort aims to help people upgrade from old 2G and 3G phones to newer 4G technology.

Why This Really Matters

Although MTN’s 4G network covers most of South Africa, many people still use phones that can’t connect to it. This limits their ability to access faster internet and better-quality calls. By offering affordable smartphones, MTN hopes to help more people, especially in low-income areas, switch to newer devices and benefit from modern technology. Read more here

This move is also part of MTN’s broader plan to improve its network by gradually shutting down older 2G and 3G services. By focusing on 4G and preparing for future 5G technology, the company aims to provide better internet access for needed services like online learning, mobile banking, and healthcare.

Making Connectivity More Affordable

MTN CEO Charles Molapisi highlighted that cost is a major barrier preventing people from upgrading their phones. “We want to ensure that everyone in South Africa can access the internet and the opportunities it brings,” he said. “Offering low-cost smartphones is a key step in helping people improve their lives.”

Helping Small Businesses and Startups

This initiative is also expected to benefit small businesses, entrepreneurs, and startups. With better access to 4G, business owners can use online tools to promote their products, reach more customers, and run their businesses more efficiently, even in remote areas. From mobile payments to digital marketing, affordable smartphones and faster internet can help businesses grow, create jobs, and strengthen the economy.

Concerns About Accessibility

However, some critics worry that the program may not reach those who need it most. MTN requires buyers to have an active prepaid SIM card for at least three months. This means people who don’t regularly use mobile services or have just started may not qualify. As a result, there are concerns that the poorest and most marginalized communities who could benefit the most might be left out. Nevertheless, many potential beneficiaries remain hopeful as they wait for the program to fully take effect.

By making 4G smartphones more affordable, MTN is taking a major step toward increasing digital access. The real challenge, however, will be ensuring that it truly reaches and benefits the people who need it most.

Africa is getting more Big Tech investment, but the basics are still holding it back

Google, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon and Starlink are putting more money into Africa's digital infrastructure. Subsea cables are reaching more parts of the continent, satellite internet is expanding and cloud companies are adding services for African customers. For businesses that have spent years dealing with unreliable connections, that is useful. There is still a problem underneath
