MTN Nigeria is set to disconnect customers who have not adhered to the new national identity regulations, following an industry-wide directive from the Nigerian government. In April 2022, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) mandated all operators to restrict outgoing calls for subscribers whose SIMs are not linked to their national identity numbers (NINs).
MTN, in response to a formal directive from the NCC, confirmed its commitment to implementing full network barring on phone lines without submitted or verified NINs. The company is actively engaging with affected subscribers through various channels to encourage NIN submission for verification.
In a statement to investors, MTN Nigeria emphasized its dedication to compliance with the NCC directive, working alongside the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to expedite the NIN verification process. The telecom company is enhancing service outlets to facilitate a smoother and more efficient process for subscribers.
Acknowledging the importance of a reliable National Identity Management system for national and economic development, MTN Nigeria reassured investors of its commitment to compliance with industry-wide directives. The company plans to provide further updates on progress and potential impacts with the release of its FY 2023 results.
MTN urged subscribers yet to link their NINs to their phone lines to take immediate action by visiting the nearest MTN outlet or using digital channels before the specified deadlines. For those without a NIN, the recommendation is to visit any of the NIMC’s enrollment centers nationwide for enrollment.
The relationship between MTN and Nigerian authorities has been marked by a series of disputes, fines, negotiations, court cases, and compromises spanning over two decades. MTN commenced operations in Nigeria in August 2001, and the complex relationship has endured challenges, including a $5.2 billion fine imposed by the NCC in 2015 for failure to disconnect unregistered SIM cards.
