Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is forging ahead with its mission to expand the accessibility of its generative AI-powered products to a broader user base. In addition to testing its Meta AI chatbot on WhatsApp in countries like India, the company is now delving into integrating Meta AI into the Instagram search bar for both AI-assisted chat and content discovery.
When users enter a search query into the Instagram search bar, they are directed to a direct message (DM) conversation with Meta AI. Here, users can pose questions or utilize pre-loaded prompts. Interestingly, the design of the prompt screen has drawn comparisons to the search screen of Perplexity AI, as noted by Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity AI.
Beyond facilitating user interaction, this integration also aims to enhance content discovery on Instagram. For instance, a user’s video on Threads suggests that tapping on a prompt like “Beautiful Maui sunset Reels” will initiate a search for Reels content related to that topic.
Additionally, select users interviewed by TechCrunch were able to request Meta AI to provide suggestions for Reels content. This indicates Meta’s intention to harness the capabilities of generative AI beyond text generation, utilizing it to surface new content from networks like Instagram.
Meta has confirmed its experiment with Meta AI on Instagram to TechCrunch. However, the company has not explicitly stated whether it is employing generative AI technology in the search function.

A Meta spokesperson informed TechCrunch, “Our generative AI-powered experiences are under development in varying phases, and we’re testing a range of them publicly in a limited capacity.”
Given the plethora of discussions about the quality of Instagram search, Meta’s exploration of using generative AI to enhance search functionality is unsurprising. Moreover, Meta likely aims to elevate Instagram’s discoverability, especially in comparison to competing platforms like TikTok.
In a bid to further improve discoverability, Meta appears to be exploring options to integrate Instagram posts into search engine results. Reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi recently uncovered an option called “Visibility off Instagram,” suggesting a potential initiative to display Instagram posts as part of search engine outcomes.
