Meta Platforms Discusses Integrating Generative AI with Apple’s New iPhone System

Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, is reportedly in talks to integrate its generative AI model into Apple’s newly announced AI system for iPhones, according to the Wall Street Journal on Sunday. This development comes as Apple seeks to incorporate technology from various AI companies into its devices, including a potential collaboration with long-time search partner Google.

Apple is also expected to explore partnerships with other AI companies in different regions, such as China, where the Microsoft-backed OpenAI chatbot, ChatGPT, is banned. One AI start-up, Anthropic, is said to be in discussions with Apple to bring its generative AI to Apple Intelligence, as reported by the Journal, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Neither Apple, Meta, nor Anthropic have responded to requests for comment outside of business hours. The discussions are still in the preliminary stages and may not come to fruition, but deals with Apple could provide AI companies with broader distribution for their products.

The financial benefits of these potential deals are not yet clear, but the talks include discussions about AI companies selling premium subscriptions to their services through Apple Intelligence. AI search start-up Perplexity is also reportedly in discussions with Apple to bring its generative AI technology to Apple Intelligence, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Earlier this month, Apple announced its long-anticipated AI strategy, stating that it would integrate the new Apple Intelligence technology across its suite of apps, including Siri, and introduce ChatGPT to its devices.
