The German automaker, Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a new virtual assistant at the CES electronics trade fair on Monday, which is capable of providing context-based suggestions, as well as engaging in dialogue with users, signalling another step forward in the use of artificial intelligence in cars.

According to the company, the assistant is also tone intelligent as it can speak in different tones of various emotions and ask intelligent questions to clarify what exactly is being asked.

At a press roundtable in Las Vegas, Mercedes chief technology officer Markus Schaefer said: “The car is your dialogue partner. You can ask questions, have a conversation, be productive.”

The new assistant will debut in vehicles such as the innovative CLA class, an all-electric rendition of the car manufacturer’s compact four-door model, making its North American premiere at the trade show.

Given that electric vehicle technology is generally more straightforward and consistent compared to traditional combustion-engine vehicles, automotive companies are focusing on distinguishing themselves through software innovations.

The sophistication of voice assistant technology in automobiles is on the rise, incorporating features like personalized avatars and advanced generative AI.

On Monday, Volkswagen also unveiled its initial vehicles equipped with a voice assistant powered by ChatGPT technology, allowing drivers to have pertinent content read aloud during their journeys.

By mid-year, Volkswagen anticipates that its voice assistant will facilitate interactive dialogues with users, recalling prior inquiries and tailoring responses accordingly.

Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz highlighted an additional capability of its latest voice assistant: a validity check for its answers. This feature cross-references recommendations using cloud data and customer feedback, ensuring accuracy, especially when, for instance, a previously recommended establishment like a restaurant or store has ceased operations.
