Kenyan startup Drinkmates has introduced what it describes as a “social logistics engine,” a platform designed to enable spontaneous, real-world meetups through real-time geospatial signaling.
Based in Nairobi, Drinkmates is available on the Google Play Store and aims to remove the coordination friction that often slows down social interactions among urban professionals across Africa.
The platform allows users to broadcast location-based intent such as co-working in Kilimani or socialising in Westlands to selected circles, making it easier to organise meetups without lengthy back-and-forth messaging. By shifting from conversation to action, the app simplifies how people connect in physical spaces.
Early traction has been promising. During its private beta in Nairobi, the startup recorded a 100 percent cohort retention rate over a six-week period, highlighting strong demand for high-intent, real-world social tools.
Rethinking the Social Stack
According to founder Eric Mutema, the problem lies in how existing platforms are designed. “The current social stack is optimised for digital engagement, but it remains inefficient at moving people through physical space,” he said. “We are not building another social network we are creating logistics infrastructure for the real-world experience economy. By removing the friction of planning, we make social connection effortless for Africa’s mobile-first workforce.”
Scaling Across African Cities
Bootstrapped and built on a high-concurrency, event-driven architecture, Drinkmates is now aligning itself for regional growth. Following its launch in Nairobi, the company plans to deepen its footprint in Kenya before expanding into other major urban hubs, including Lagos and Johannesburg.
