Kenya Advocates Stricter Oversight Measures Instead of TikTok Ban Amid Content Concerns

Kenya’s government is adopting a cautious approach in response to growing concerns over content circulated on the popular social media app TikTok, urging against a blanket ban and advocating for stricter oversight measures instead. Authorities are proposing enhanced regulatory scrutiny to address issues related to propaganda dissemination, fraud perpetration, and the sharing of explicit material on the platform.

A parliamentary panel has been actively considering a petition calling for the prohibition of TikTok, prompted by allegations from the interior ministry regarding its misuse. However, Kenya’s Ministry of Information and Communication has proposed an alternative strategy, advocating for the implementation of a co-regulation framework rather than an outright ban.

According to an advisory communicated to the parliamentary panel and disclosed to Reuters on Thursday, the proposed framework would entail mandating TikTok to screen its content to ensure compliance with Kenyan laws. Additionally, the platform would be required to provide quarterly reports to the government, outlining the content removed based on regulatory guidelines.

ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, has yet to issue a response to these developments. However, the company has previously defended its commitment to user privacy amid similar regulatory criticisms worldwide.

TikTok has faced regulatory scrutiny in various countries, particularly in Western nations. Recently, Italy imposed fines on three TikTok entities for inadequate content checks, particularly concerning material deemed potentially harmful to minors or vulnerable users.

Meanwhile, in the United States, the Senate passed legislation on Tuesday targeting TikTok, with a provision to ban the app if ByteDance fails to divest within the next nine to twelve months. These developments underscore the global regulatory challenges faced by TikTok and the ongoing efforts to address concerns related to content moderation and user safety.
