Intel Corporation is introducing a new iteration of its artificial intelligence chip, aiming to compete with Nvidia Corporation in the rapidly expanding semiconductor sector.

Dubbed Gaudi 3, the updated processor is set to be widely available in the third quarter, as announced by Intel during a company event on Tuesday.

The primary focus of the chip is to enhance performance in two crucial areas: facilitating the training of AI systems, involving extensive data processing, and executing the final software.

With soaring demand for AI services, tech firms are racing to develop accelerator chips to meet this need, with Nvidia predominantly leading the market.

Intel’s CEO, Pat Gelsinger, acknowledged that earlier versions of Gaudi failed to achieve the market share Intel desired. However, he expressed optimism regarding the impact of the new model.

“People want an alternative,” Gelsinger stated, referring to Nvidia as a formidable competitor. “The world needs more suppliers, and we’re quite dedicated to providing that choice.”

Although Intel shares experienced a slight increase following the announcement, challenging Nvidia’s dominance won’t be without its challenges. Nvidia’s H100 accelerator’s immense success propelled the company’s revenue, surpassing the $2 trillion market valuation mark.

Nvidia is further strengthening its position with the introduction of Blackwell, a newly announced chip platform expected to bolster its lead.

According to Intel’s assessments, Gaudi 3 boasts superior speed and power efficiency compared to Nvidia’s H100. It claims to train specific AI models 1.7 times faster and exhibit 1.5 times better software performance.

While Intel anticipates Gaudi 3 to be competitive with Nvidia’s H200, the ultimate comparison awaits until Nvidia’s Blackwell line hits the market.

Rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc. is also vying for a share of the market, unveiling its MI300 accelerator line-up in December.

Gelsinger emphasized that Intel’s goal isn’t merely to catch up with Nvidia but to capitalize on the potential windfall AI offers across various sectors, including personal computing, mobile devices, and networking gear.

Intel’s increased supply of Gaudi reflects the growing demand for AI capabilities. Market projections suggest significant growth in corporate spending on generative AI gear, reaching $151 billion by 2027.

Despite Intel’s ambitious plans, Nvidia maintains a substantial lead, with data centre revenue exceeding $47 billion in the past 12 months. Analysts estimate this figure will surpass $95 billion in the current fiscal year.
