In a bid to bolster Africa’s rapidly expanding technology sector, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) has unveiled a $10.5 million (R194 billion) investment in a new fund by 4DX Ventures, a venture capital firm based in New York. This strategic partnership aims to empower early-stage African tech companies spanning various sectors, including fintech, e-commerce, edtech, climate tech, and health tech.
The investment from IFC will be sourced from its $225 million venture capital platform, established last year with the objective of fortifying emerging venture capital ecosystems and providing support to early-stage enterprises across Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, and Pakistan. This initiative underscores the growing recognition of the immense potential in these regions, historically underrepresented in venture capital investment, accounting for just 2% of global venture deal volume in the third quarter of 2023.
Walter Baddoo, Co-Founder and General Partner of 4DX Ventures, emphasized the shared commitment between IFC and 4DX Ventures to nurture tech entrepreneurs driving innovation in critical areas such as climate, healthcare, fintech, e-commerce, and education. “We look forward to partnering with IFC to help promising tech start-ups build transformative businesses and realize sustainable development impact on the continent,” remarked Baddoo.
The 4DX Ventures Fund III will concentrate on investing in companies offering technology-driven solutions to enhance productivity, efficiency, and competitiveness across Africa. The firm’s previous two funds have already witnessed notable successes, backing ventures like Egypt-based e-commerce platform MaxAB, Ghana-based health tech firm mPharma, and Kenya-based B2B e-commerce platform Wasoko.
Mohamed Gouled, Vice President of Industries at IFC, highlighted the venture capital platform’s objective of advancing tech ecosystems in emerging markets to enhance access to essential services, foster business competitiveness, and stimulate job creation through digital transformation. “Our investment in venture funds such as 4DX Ventures will facilitate African entrepreneurs’ access to the financing and resources required to scale tech innovations and drive sustainable growth across the continent,” stated Gouled.
In addition to the financial infusion, IFC will collaborate closely with 4DX Ventures to ensure the implementation of robust environmental and social management systems, underscoring its commitment to promoting responsible and sustainable growth within Africa’s tech landscape.
This partnership between IFC and 4DX Ventures signifies a significant stride in unlocking Africa’s technology sector’s vast potential. By providing critical capital and resources, this collaboration aims to empower a new generation of African tech entrepreneurs, catalysing innovation and transformative change throughout the continent.
