Huawei Cloud Launches $10 Million Program to Support Nigerian Startups

In a bid to foster innovation and bolster the digital ecosystem in Nigeria, Huawei Cloud has unveiled an interesting initiative, earmarking $10 million in cloud credits to assist 100 Nigerian startups over the next two years.

The announcement came during the Huawei Cloud Startup Summit held in Lagos on April 3, 2024, which served as a dynamic platform for over 150 industry startups, venture capitalists, and partners to explore the realms of startup innovation and digital transformation. With the aim of propelling innovation and expansion, this program extends a lifeline to startups by granting them access to state-of-the-art cloud resources and fostering a conducive environment for growth.

Hugo Hu, Director of Huawei Cloud, delivered a compelling keynote address at the summit, urging Nigerian startups to collaborate on innovation and spearhead the evolution of Nigeria’s digital economy. Hu highlighted the myriad challenges confronting startups, including technology adoption, funding constraints, data security, and regulatory compliance, emphasizing the pivotal role of cloud technology in overcoming these hurdles and accelerating innovation.

Huawei Cloud is steadfast in its commitment to nurturing the Nigerian startup ecosystem, offering seamless access to cost-effective cloud resources and unlocking new avenues for business acceleration. Hu asserted, “We firmly believe that Huawei Cloud is the optimal choice for Nigerian startups.”

Under the startup program, Huawei Cloud pledges to provide participating startups with cloud-native infrastructure, professional services, and up to $150,000 in cloud credits, substantially reducing the cost of cloud services by 40%. This initiative not only equips Nigerian startups with the tools for success but also facilitates access to potential clients and investors across 177 countries.

Dotun Adekunle, Senior Vice President of Flutterwave, emphasized the indispensable role of cloud services in enabling companies to compete on a global scale, affirming that “our efficiency in running Flutterwave would be compromised without utilizing cloud technology.”

Looking ahead, Huawei Cloud aims to onboard 10,000 startups globally by 2025, with a significant focus on the African continent. Paul Adigu, Ecosystem Director of Huawei Cloud Nigeria, outlined three strategic initiatives to realize the objectives of the startup program: leveraging advanced cloud infrastructure, nurturing startup talent, and providing essential business resources.

In line with its vision of creating a robust cloud infrastructure for an interconnected world, Huawei Cloud is poised to introduce a local cloud in Nigeria by 2024. With 88 Availability Zones established across 30 global regions, Huawei Cloud is poised to drive transformative change and empower Nigerian startups on their journey towards success in the digital age.
