Just when you think you have seen it all in the world of tech, comes a phone made from cartoons. Yes. HMD has partnered with Mattel to release a Barbie Flip Phone in the middle of this year.

Lars Silberbauer who is the Chief Marketing Officer for HMD (Human Mobile Devices) said: “Is it time to swap reel life for real life and take a breather from all the interruptions of notifications? We’re thrilled to partner with Mattel, a company that shares our commitment to meaningful innovation and societal change.”

The main reason behind this production is the fact that there is now a huge demand for a digital detox and for even the youngest phone users to step away from their smartphones.

HMD reveals that 38% of individuals between the ages of 16 and 24 express concerns about excessive smartphone usage, while one-third of Generation Z in the United States actively seeks to limit their time on social media, with the fear of missing out (FOMO) on the decline.

In response to this trend, HMD is introducing the flip phone, and the iconic Barbie brand is venturing into this device category following the success of the 2023 Barbie Movie. Ruth Henriquez, Head of Consumer Products at Mattel, emphasizes the collaboration’s innovation, positioning it as a significant step forward for Mattel’s design initiatives. The Barbie x HMD launch is set to captivate Barbie enthusiasts of all ages, with the unveiling scheduled for Mobile World Congress.

These “feature phones,” often referred to as “dumb phones,” are gaining popularity as individuals prioritize limiting screen time for mental health reasons. While this movement is notable, it is unlikely to significantly impact industry giants like Samsung or Apple.

Subsea cables are reaching more parts of the continent, satellite internet is expanding and cloud companies are adding services for African customers. For businesses that have spent years dealing with unreliable connections, that is useful. There is still a problem underneath
