DXwand, a startup based in Cairo and Dubai, has secured $4 million in Series A funding to advance its conversational AI technology for automating customer service and employee assistance in the Middle East. Shorooq Partners and Algebra Ventures, based in the UAE and Cairo, respectively, led the funding round, with participation from existing investor Dubai Future District Fund. The investment aims to support DXwand’s expansion across the MENA region and accelerate its research and development efforts in generative AI, knowledge mining, and omnichannel conversational AI within the region.

Founded by CEO Ahmed Mahmoud, a former Microsoft employee, DXwand initially focused on providing small businesses with a customer-centric chatbot tailored for sales over social media platforms. However, the startup underwent a pivot in 2021, shifting its focus to corporates and enterprises. DXwand now specializes in knowledge mining and retrieval augmented generation (RAG) domains, aiming to create a knowledge graph that eliminates the need for manual data labeling, making the onboarding process faster and supporting sophisticated use cases for enterprises.

The AI-powered software by DXwand automates text and voice conversations across various platforms, including call centers, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, SMS, and websites. It claims to comprehend slang in both Arabic and English, extracting valuable insights from conversations and presenting them on dashboards for businesses. The platform provides analytical tools and dashboards to transform conversations into leads and sales, enhancing customer retention and acquisition.

With the additional funding, DXwand plans to expand its model in the Middle East and Gulf regions, leveraging investments in knowledge mining and extending its solutions to various languages. The startup aims to scale its operations in Africa and Europe, targeting clients in diverse sectors such as healthcare, e-commerce, fintech, telecom, government, and legal. DXwand reported over $5 million in annual recurring revenues in 2023, representing a 2x year-over-year growth, making it a profitable entity. The startup intends to continue its growth by expanding into Africa and Saudi Arabia and strengthening research efforts in knowledge mining and retrieval augmented generation. Additionally, forming alliances with technology providers and telecom operators to establish meaningful partnerships within the communities it serves is part of DXwand’s strategic plans.

Africa is getting more Big Tech investment, but the basics are still holding it back

Google, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon and Starlink are putting more money into Africa's digital infrastructure. Subsea cables are reaching more parts of the continent, satellite internet is expanding and cloud companies are adding services for African customers. For businesses that have spent years dealing with unreliable connections, that is useful. There is still a problem underneath
