Navigating Growth and Challenges in South Africa’s E-Hailing Market

Ashif Black – Country Representative for inDrive South Africa

In This episode of Business chat we speak to Ashif Black, the South African country representative for Indrive – the e-hailing disruptor in South Africa.

Growth Potential and Market Size:

The e-hailing market in South Africa is vast, with inDrive already operating in 16 cities across South Africa, and rapidly expanding.

The market’s growth potential is significant, which is highlighted by a current backlog of nearly 200,000 operating permit applications awaiting approval in regions like Gauteng, indicating ongoing high demand for e-hailing services.

Disruptor – Challenging Current Industry Norms

inDrive is also disrupting the existing e-hailing business models with its unique Peer-to-Peer Pricing Model: Indrive distinguishes itself with a peer-to-peer pricing model, allowing drivers and passengers to negotiate fares directly beforehand. This approach, according to Ashif, priorities people over profit, offering flexibility and competitive pricing compared to traditional algorithm-driven models.

Average Salary Earned by Drivers:

Indrive’s top 50 drivers earned an average of over 27,000 Rand per month in the first half of 2025. This figure highlights the platform’s potential for livable earnings, with drivers optimizing their time through a mix of short and long rides and additional opportunities like intercity courier services.

Challenges:

The industry faces challenges such as the backlog of government permits and maintaining rigorous safety checks. and there are also questions of the sustainability of Indrive’s cash-based system that could in future presents logistical challenges in a market moving towards digital payments. There are however a growing number of easy to implement cashless alternatives emerging in the African Landscape that could solve this.
