Interview with Angela McMean – Braintree
This week I spoke to IT industry specialist and Vice President of Human Capital at Tech group BrainTree, and had a meaningful discussion about the value of mentorship, human capital as part of your company brand value and developing safe space for all.
Its certainly worth a listen if you wish to retain and develop great staff into company champions.
Key Quotes from Angela:

“When we look at an individual, we’re really looking at a person as being a unique person. And what is it that you can bring into our organization? And how can we tap to get that best version of yourself to come to the office consistently every day.
About Remote work and Staff Retention
In the world that we’re living in now with hybrid working, it’s hard to maintain the kind of one-on-one personal contact with people when you’re not seeing people every day and having that connection with them in the office. I think it really takes something special to be able to keep that going.
“The best thing a company can have is have this staff retention. So the minute people start feeling like they’re not trusted or they’re not valued or their self-worth starts dropping, they look for something else and they look for another organization where they can get those feelings. So the longer any organization can maintain their staff – attracting new staff, it becomes so easy because by word of mouth, people have heard about how our organization works and we have a queue of people just waiting to join”.
Staff Are Part of your Brand Value
“There’s so many platforms out there where people that are not happy at the company, or even if they are, can post articles and surveys. So it really is out there. You can go and do a search on any company and kind of get a temperature check on how their staff are feeling”.
“A recognition of how important mentorship is in the environment that we’re in (IT & Tech),and to be able to grow women in IT, we need to have so much more focus daily on mentorship in this space”.
Mentorship Makes the Difference
“Most companies are so focused on the bottom line and people trying to push what they can achieve in a day or what they need to achieve or to hit their own targets and their KPI’s – It is sometimes hard to dedicate that time into bringing other people along that journey with you”.
“You can ask anyone out there what they remember about a job they were at. They never tell you about the work that they did. They tell you about a person that affected their lives and how that person has kind of shaped them into making sure that they can help the next person”.
“Creating the safe space (for staff) is really creating a community, where we can tell our stories, where we can talk to each other, where we can be open and honest about who we are”.
