Bluebulb helps African businesses move money across borders. Last week, the company attracted attention for something different. A Bluebulb team finished among the top six entrants in the DSN x Bluechip Technologies LLM Agent Challenge 3.0. The national competition attracted more than 590 submissions from across Nigeria. Organisers gave participants just 10 days to build a working product using large language models. Teams also had to submit research explaining their approach.

Looking Beyond Payments

Bluebulb entered the competition with the Naija Persona Agent. The project explored a simple question. How well do systems trained on foreign data understand local customers? The team built the project using millions of Nigerian consumer interactions. It looked beyond language and focused on behaviour. The system identified patterns in how people engage with brands, respond to marketing and make purchasing decisions.

Why Local Data Matters

The project reflects a broader conversation within Africa’s technology sector. Many businesses rely on digital tools developed elsewhere. At the same time, entrepreneurs and researchers want systems that reflect local markets and consumer habits. For Bluebulb, the competition offered a chance to test ideas outside its payments business. “We have shown that Africa can develop intelligent systems that understand its people,” said Odunayo Rotimi, Data and AI Automation Manager at Bluebulb.

A Cross-Functional Effort

Bluebulb CEO and co founder Ola Daramola said the result showed what teams can achieve when companies encourage experimentation and learning. Chief Innovation Officer Gbenga Osowe led the project. He brought together specialists from Bluebulb’s data, research and product teams. Their work earned recognition from the organisers and a cash prize from Bluechip Technologies. The result is unlikely to change Bluebulb’s position in the payments industry overnight. It does, however, highlight how businesses are exploring new technologies beyond their core operations. Interest in locally built digital solutions continues to grow across Africa. Competitions such as the DSN x Bluechip challenge give companies a way to test ideas, develop new skills and measure their progress against peers.

Africa is getting more Big Tech investment, but the basics are still holding it back

Google, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon and Starlink are putting more money into Africa's digital infrastructure. Subsea cables are reaching more parts of the continent, satellite internet is expanding and cloud companies are adding services for African customers. For businesses that have spent years dealing with unreliable connections, that is useful. There is still a problem underneath
