Aions Ventures has officially launched Aions Seed Fund I, a R100 million dedicated seed fund aimed at supporting early-stage technology startups. Furthermore, this initiative is particularly significant because it addresses a growing imbalance in the African funding landscape, where capital has become heavily concentrated in later-stage and scale-up ventures.

Addressing the Persistent Early-Stage Chasm

South Africa boasts one of Africa’s most vibrant startup ecosystems, with notable strengths in fintech, climate tech, and digital innovation. However, a stubborn funding gap continues to hinder progress. Many promising ventures struggle to move from early traction to Series A readiness. While later-stage deals continue to attract the bulk of investment, early-stage funding remains uneven and insufficient. As a result, numerous viable businesses are left under-supported during their most vulnerable phase.

In response to this challenge, Aions Ventures has introduced its new fund. The R100 million Aions Seed Fund I consists of R60 million allocated through the High Impact Seed Fund of Funds (HISFoF) — a R300 million fund-of-funds managed by the SA SME Fund and backed by the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) and E Squared Investments. Additionally, TIA has committed a further R40 million directly to the fund.

Beyond Capital: Hands-On Support

Importantly, Aions Ventures is not only providing funding but also emphasising active involvement. For Kerryn Campion, COO at Aions Ventures, the true value of the fund lies in its deployment strategy.

“South Africa has significant entrepreneurial potential. The challenge is to convert that early promise into investable, scalable, and commercially sustainable businesses. That transition is where many companies struggle.”

Aions has already proven its approach by seeding five companies using its own balance sheet and supporting six others through enterprise and supplier development programmes in partnership with Telkom FutureMakers. In each case, the firm provides far more than capital.

“Too many promising South African startups stall before they reach scale. This fund backs founders earlier and gives them the hands-on support they need to build businesses ready for follow-on capital,” Campion explains. “For us, it goes beyond identifying opportunities to staying close to the business as it develops. We help manage risk and ensure that the right financial and operational discipline supports growth.”

Strategic Focus Areas

In addition, the fund will target specific high-impact sectors. These include the digital economy, climate and environmental sustainability, energy innovation supporting the just transition, and alternative water solutions. Consequently, the fund aligns well with both national development priorities and global sustainability trends.

Broader Ecosystem Support

The involvement of major institutions further strengthens the initiative. Dr Titus Mathe, CEO of the Technology Innovation Agency, emphasised the systemic importance of such funds:

“The gap between innovation and commercialisation remains one of the most significant challenges in South Africa’s innovation ecosystem. South Africa’s venture capital ecosystem remains under-capitalised and untransformed… Through initiatives like this, we can support the translation of promising ideas into viable, market-ready businesses.”

Similarly, Ketso Gordhan, CEO of the SA SME Fund, highlighted the strategic value of partnering with experienced managers:

“South Africa’s growth depends on building a stronger pipeline of scalable businesses. By allocating capital through experienced fund managers, we can extend our reach into the early-stage market and support ventures at the point where they are most vulnerable but also where the potential for impact and returns is highest.”

Looking Ahead

With the capital now secured, Aions Ventures is shifting its focus toward execution. The firm is actively engaging with early-stage founders who are building in the targeted sectors and are ready to move from initial traction into disciplined, scalable growth.

Ultimately, in an environment often dominated by large mega-rounds, funds like Aions Seed Fund I play a vital role. By combining capital with hands-on support, Aions Ventures is helping to strengthen South Africa’s entrepreneurial pipeline and increase the chances of turning promising ideas into successful, sustainable businesses.

Founders working in the fund’s priority areas are encouraged to reach out to the Aions Ventures team.

These Kenyan startups raised millions before shutting down. What happened?

Kenya's startup market has produced some big funding rounds. It has also produced some expensive failures. Sendy, Copia, Gro Intelligence, KOKO Networks, MarketForce, Lipa Later, iProcure, Kune, Bonto, Mobius Motors and Notify Logistics all raised significant amounts of money before shutting down, entering administration or going through liquidation. Together, the companies raised more than $500
