Kehinde Olutubosun, a geography and animal enthusiast from Nigeria, faced challenges accessing information due to his visual impairment and lack of access to a smartphone. However, a revolutionary solution is changing his experience – an artificial intelligence-powered mobile phone that operates offline.
Introduced by Canada-based Viamo in Nigeria just last month, this innovative service enables individuals, even in remote areas without internet connectivity, to harness the power of AI technology.
Viamo’s groundbreaking approach utilizes traditional handsets to connect with local mobile phone networks, facilitating communication through SMS or voice calls. Similar to conventional AI chatbots, this service can be activated through voice prompts, making it accessible even to those who are illiterate. Moreover, it offers a more affordable alternative to traditional smartphones.
Olutubosun expressed his delight with the new technology, highlighting its affordability and the opportunity it presents for individuals, regardless of their financial status, to access valuable information. With a minimal investment of as little as ₦10 (approximately R0.12), users can benefit from a wealth of knowledge.
The impact of Viamo’s AI-powered mobile phone extends beyond Nigeria, with plans to expand its reach to other countries, including Pakistan, India, and Tanzania, following its successful launch in Zambia.
Backed by support from development agencies in the US and the UK, Viamo has forged partnerships with organizations like Unicef to disseminate vital information on various topics, including HIV, tropical diseases, nutrition, and water, sanitation, and hygiene.
Through innovative solutions like Viamo’s AI-powered mobile phone, individuals in the world’s poorest and most remote communities are gaining access to essential information, empowering them to make informed decisions and improve their quality of life.
