African Startups Could Benefit From New Nordic Funding Initiative
African startups looking beyond their home markets may soon have another way to connect with investors in Europe. TechBBQ, the Danish non-profit behind one of the Nordic region’s largest startup conferences, has secured DKK4 million (about $620,000) from the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The funding will help strengthen engagement between startups, investors, universities and businesses in Africa, India and the Nordic region. TechBBQ plans to launch the Nordic-Africa Innovation Summit and the Nordic-India Innovation Summit. Both will become permanent parts of its annual conference over the next three years.
Opening Doors to Nordic Capital
For African founders, the initiative could create new opportunities to meet investors and potential partners. The Nordic region continues to play an important role in global startup funding. According to Dealroom, Nordic startups attracted $7.7 billion in venture capital during 2025. That figure could exceed $9 billion in 2026. The region is also home to more than 100 unicorn companies despite its relatively small population. TechBBQ chief executive Avnit Singh said the funding would help the organisation build stronger links between the Nordic region, Africa and India.
Focus on Deeptech and Climate Solutions
The programme will focus on life sciences, artificial intelligence, deep technology, climate technology and agriculture. TechBBQ will run the programme from August 2026 to December 2028. It will take place alongside the organisation’s flagship conference in Copenhagen. The announcement comes as European investors and companies continue searching for new markets and talent. Many are also looking for business opportunities beyond their traditional networks. For many African startups, securing funding is only part of the challenge. They also need access to international business networks, research institutions and potential customers. Those connections can be just as important for long term growth. TechBBQ believes more of these introductions can benefit founders and investors alike. The new programme marks its latest effort to help make them happen.
