The start-up specializing in off-grid electric vehicle charging stations, Zero Carbon Charge has announced the launch of Zero Carbon Logistics, a ground-breaking initiative set to establish 120 photovoltaic solar electric truck charging sites along national highways in South Africa.

This pioneering venture marks the country’s inaugural off-grid electric truck charging network and aims to revolutionize long-haul transportation infrastructure while promoting sustainability and reducing carbon emissions.

The initial phase will see the construction of six charging sites strategically located along the N3 freight route between Durban and Johannesburg. These sites, situated at key points including Heidelberg, N3 Sasol, Lala Nathi, Kopleegte, Estcourt, and Ashburton, will undergo the permitting process to ensure regulatory compliance.

Each charging station will feature state-of-the-art ultra-fast charging technology paired with modular battery packs developed in China, enabling trucks to be fully charged within a remarkable 20-minute timeframe. Moreover, the project emphasizes the creation of safe and eco-friendly facilities for truck drivers, with amenities such as restrooms, shops, fast Wi-Fi, and truck repair and wash facilities. Additionally, the provision of secured day and overnight truck parking bays under constant CCTV surveillance aims to enhance road safety and security.

Zero Carbon Charge’s ambitious plan extends beyond electric truck charging, encompassing the construction of 120 off-grid charging sites for electric passenger vehicles. The company aims to complete its first electric car charging station by June 2024 and the initial six electric truck stops by November 2027.

Joubert Roux, co-founder of Zero Carbon Charge, emphasized the project’s significance in aligning with South Africa’s Green Transport Strategy, which aims to reduce transport-related CO2 emissions by 5% by 2050. The transition to electric trucks presents a substantial opportunity to achieve this goal, with potential savings of 670kg of CO2 emissions per truck per day, thereby reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuel imports.

However, the widespread adoption of electric trucks will also pose challenges, particularly in meeting the increased energy demand. Zero Carbon Charge anticipates a significant surge in electricity consumption, estimating an additional requirement of 2.3 billion kWh per year solely for charging trucks along the N3 route. To address this, the company advocates for investments in off-grid infrastructure powered by photovoltaic solar PV, ensuring resilience against grid failures and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions.

Andries Malherbe, co-founder of Zero Carbon Charge, emphasized the necessity of off-grid infrastructure to power electric trucks, especially during long-haul journeys. By harnessing solar energy, the charging stations remain operational during load-shedding events and contribute to a sustainable energy ecosystem.

Despite the potential benefits, the project’s success hinges on obtaining government approvals and support. Zero Carbon Charge acknowledges the crucial role played by entities such as the Green Energy unit from InvestSA in the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC), and the KwaZulu Natal Trade and Industry Authority in facilitating the project’s inception and development.

In conclusion, Zero Carbon Logistics represents a significant stride towards sustainable transportation infrastructure in South Africa, offering a blueprint for integrating renewable energy solutions into the country’s logistics network while mitigating environmental impact.
