South African retailer Woolworths experienced a notable surge in online sales during the first half of the 2024 financial year. In the 26 weeks ending on December 24, 2024, online sales in the fashion, beauty, and home categories increased by 26.9%, contributing 5.4% to South African sales.
The company’s online food sales also witnessed a substantial jump of 46.6%, with 5.1% of food sales attributed to online orders during this period. The boost in online food sales was primarily driven by the expansion of Woolies’ on-demand delivery service, Dash.
Launched in December 2020, Woolies Dash competes with other on-demand grocery delivery services like Shoprite Checkers’ Sixty60 and Pick n Pay’s Bottles (now rebranded PnP Asap!). Despite competition, Woolworths’ Dash has gained momentum, increasing its coverage and contributing significantly to the overall online sales growth.
