WhatsApp Rolls Out Major Updates and AI Features in 2024

Meta Platforms-owned WhatsApp has been actively enhancing its platform in 2024 with a series of updates, including a redesigned interface, AI-powered features, and various quality-of-life improvements.

Redesigned Interface

One of the most significant updates in 2024 is the redesigned user interface. In early May, WhatsApp introduced a refreshed look with a new shade of green to align with its brand, along with more vibrant colours. The update made dark mode even darker for better text readability and added more white space in light mode for a cleaner appearance. Additionally, the navigation tabs for Chat, Status, Call, Communities, and Settings were moved from the top to the bottom of the screen. This update will eventually roll out to all users without an opt-out option.

AI Integration

In April 2024, Meta launched an AI assistant within WhatsApp. This assistant, integrated into the search bar, can answer questions, create animations, and generate images. Users can leverage the AI assistant for various tasks, such as restaurant recommendations or vacation planning. Moreover, Meta introduced WhatsApp AI for Businesses, enabling companies to incorporate AI services from Meta into their conversations, thereby simplifying customer inquiry management.

Privacy Enhancements

To enhance user privacy, WhatsApp has implemented a feature that blocks screenshots of users’ profile pictures. This measure aims to prevent the unauthorized sharing and misuse of profile photos, protecting users from potential impersonation or harassment.

Device-Linking and Security Features

WhatsApp’s device-linking feature allows users to access their accounts across multiple devices. However, the absence of a chat-locking mechanism on linked devices posed a privacy concern. In February 2024, Meta began addressing this by developing a solution that allows users to set a secret code to lock chats across all linked devices. If a chat is locked on the main device, it will automatically lock on all other linked devices.

Additionally, Meta introduced two security features: passkeys and an end-to-end encryption indicator. A beta version for iOS allowed users to configure a passkey to secure their WhatsApp accounts, which is then saved to the iCloud Keychain. This enables login with a device passcode or Face ID. For devices without the passkey, users can still use the traditional six-digit code. The new end-to-end encryption indicator provides a visual confirmation at the top of chats, assuring users that their conversations are securely encrypted using the Signal protocol.

Quality-of-Life and Personalisation Updates

WhatsApp has also rolled out several quality-of-life and personalization enhancements. These include a new sticker editor, the ability to mark favourite contacts, AI-powered photo editing, voice note transcriptions, and chat filters.

User Feedback

Participants from the initial cohort of the AWS Generative AI Accelerator shared positive experiences with WhatsApp’s updates. Jachin Bhasme, co-founder and COO of Leonardo.AI, highlighted how the infrastructure improvements reduced inferencing costs and accelerated language model inference speeds. Nima Alidoust, CEO and co-founder of Vevo Therapeutics, praised the combination of technology and support that facilitated model training and development.
