Volkswagen reveals the Golf 8.5 GTI

Volkswagen has officially unveiled the latest iteration of its iconic Golf, dubbed the ‘8.5’, showcasing a revamped exterior, enhanced cabin technology, and a more potent GTI model.

While awaiting final confirmation for the South African lineup, it is anticipated that the local market will predominantly feature the Golf GTI and the upcoming Golf R, yet to be disclosed in its facelifted version. Globally, Volkswagen offers an extensive range of Golf models, encompassing TSI and TDI turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, eTSI mild hybrids, and two plug-in hybrids, including the high-performance GTE, boasting an impressive electric range of up to 100km.

The spotlight, however, is on the GTI for 2024, with reports suggesting a power boost for the performance hatchback. The EA 888 2.0-litre turbopetrol is said to deliver 195kW, marking a 15kW increase from the current model. Specific performance figures are yet to be disclosed by Volkswagen.

All Golf models showcase a refreshed exterior aesthetic, featuring new LED headlights and taillights, along with a redesigned front bumper. The ‘performance’ headlight option now extends its illumination to the grille strip and VW badge. Additionally, customers can opt for LED Matrix headlights paired with new 3D taillight clusters.

Distinguishing the ‘regular’ Golf models are the horizontal blades in the lower bumper, while the GTI and GTE boast a distinctive bumper design with honeycomb trim, a unique rear diffuser with twin tailpipes, and new ‘telephone dial’ alloy wheels.

Volkswagen emphasizes a significant enhancement in the user-friendliness of the completely redesigned infotainment system, featuring new software, graphics, and a refreshed menu structure. The visually freestanding infotainment system is available in two sizes depending on the model: 10.4 inches (26.4cm) or 12.9 inches (32.8cm), with the latter being standard on the GTI.

Touch sliders for climate and volume control have been redesigned for improved usability and are now illuminated. The lower part of the screen is dedicated to the climate system for easier access.

Addressing previous criticisms, Volkswagen introduces the new Park Assist Pro system, enabling drivers to remotely park their vehicle using a mobile app. A new 360-degree Area View system merges four external cameras for enhanced visibility.

Inside the GTI’s cabin, a multi-function sports steering wheel, red stitching, and premium sports seats contribute to the distinctive atmosphere. For the first time, genuine carbon fibre interior trim details are available as an optional addition.
