Toyota Launches First Fully Electric Vehicle in South Africa

Toyota has officially launched its first fully electric vehicle in South Africa, introducing the bZ4X SUV at a starting price of R1,182,800 as the company expands beyond hybrids in the local market. The move marks a significant shift for Toyota South Africa, which until now focused mainly on hybrid and mild-hybrid vehicles instead of fully electric passenger cars.

The bZ4X is powered by a 73.1kWh lithium-ion battery paired with two electric motors mounted on each axle, giving the SUV all-wheel drive capability. Combined output stands at 255kW and 438Nm of torque. Toyota says the vehicle delivers an estimated range of around 480km on a single charge, with energy consumption figures between 15.1 and 15.7kWh/100km.

Performance and Features

Performance is also positioned as part of the appeal. Toyota has electronically limited the SUV’s top speed to 160km/h, while acceleration from 0 to 100km/h takes 5.1 seconds. South Africa will receive the updated version of the bZ4X, which Toyota first introduced globally in 2022 before rolling out a major refresh in May 2025.

Locally, the vehicle will be sold with a three-year or 100,000km warranty and a six-service or 90,000km service plan. Toyota said servicing intervals are set at 12 months or every 15,000km. The SUV is also expected to include a range of technology and safety features, including Toyota Safety Sense, a 14-inch infotainment display, a 360-degree camera system, panoramic sunroof, and anti-theft systems as standard.

Toyota Expands EV Plans

The launch follows comments made by Toyota South Africa CEO Andrew Kirby in August 2025, when he confirmed plans to introduce three electric vehicles into the local market during 2026. Although Toyota did not identify all the models at the time, the bZ4X had already been confirmed as one of the vehicles expected to arrive locally.

Until now, Toyota’s electrified lineup in South Africa consisted mainly of hybrid models such as the Prius, Corolla hybrid range, and mild-hybrid versions of the Hilux and Fortuner. The company’s biggest breakthrough in the local new-energy vehicle segment came in 2021 with the launch of the Corolla Cross hybrid.

Built at Toyota’s Prospecton plant in Durban, the Corolla Cross hybrid became the first hybrid vehicle to be mass-produced in South Africa. The model gained strong traction partly because Toyota positioned it closer to the pricing of traditional petrol and diesel vehicles, helping it become one of the country’s best-selling passenger vehicles. The arrival of the bZ4X now places Toyota directly into South Africa’s growing fully electric vehicle market as more manufacturers continue introducing EVs into the country.
