BMW has confirmed that the fifth-generation X5 is entering the final stages of development, with calibration drives underway at its Spartanburg, South Carolina production facility. Slated for market introduction in the coming year, this new Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) marks a significant evolution from the current fourth-generation model (G05), particularly in its unprecedented range of powertrain options and advanced technology borrowed from the Neue Klasse platform.
Expanded Drive-train options
One of the most striking differences is the expanded choice of drive systems. The current X5 offers petrol and diesel mild-hybrid variants (typically 48V systems), plug-in hybrids like the xDrive50e with a modest battery (around 25-29 kWh gross, delivering roughly 48-64 kilometres of electric range), and high-performance M models.
The new X5 becomes the first BMW production model to offer five distinct technologies: refined petrol and diesel mild-hybrids, plug-in hybrids, a fully electric BMW iX5, and, arriving in 2028, the pioneering BMW iX5 Hydrogen fuel-cell variant. This positions the new model as a true multi-powertrain flagship, addressing diverse market needs from efficiency to zero-local-emissions driving.
The fully electric iX5 represents a major upgrade. It utilises sixth-generation eDrive technology with an 800-volt architecture, cylindrical cells, and a substantially larger high-voltage battery, boasting 141 kWh (EU) usable capacity. This is a dramatic increase over any current electric or hybrid X5 setup. Dual motors with xDrive all-wheel drive will deliver strong performance and efficiency, marking BMW’s entry into dedicated electric SAVs in this segment.
Design and Performance Upgrades
Further innovation comes with the iX5 Hydrogen, featuring a third-generation fuel cell, an innovative Flat Storage system with seven carbon-fibre high-pressure tanks integrated efficiently into a metal frame. This design preserves full cabin and cargo space giving a notable advantage over configurations that compromise interior usability, and allows production on the same line as other variants, improving manufacturing flexibility.
Driving dynamics have, according to BMW, received a comprehensive overhaul thanks to the “Heart of Joy” control unit from Neue Klasse technology. This high-performance driving stack processes inputs ten times faster than previous systems, enabling millisecond adjustments to powertrain, brakes, steering, charging, and recuperation. The result is enhanced agility, precision, and smoother regenerative braking in electric models, alongside better traction management in combustion and hybrid variants. The current X5 already offers strong handling, but the new model promises a more responsive and composed experience.
Chassis and wheel upgrades further differentiate the newcomer. Larger rims — up to 23 inches — with mixed-size tyres become available, paired with standard adaptive suspension featuring individually controlled electronic dampers and near 50:50 weight distribution. Optional Adaptive Chassis Control Professional adds two-axle air suspension, Integral Active Steering, and active roll stabilisation for superior comfort and dynamism, building on but exceeding the current model’s capabilities (which top out around 22-inch wheels in many configurations).
Intuitive Driver Assistance Advances
Driver assistance systems advance to the next level with innovative SAE Level 2 features, including the optional Motorway and City Assistant offering Entry-to-Exit and Address-to-Address functionality. BMW’s Symbiotic Drive philosophy emphasises seamless human-AI interaction, keeping the driver engaged rather than fully automating. Enhanced active safety features, such as intention-aware Lane Keeping, automated evasive manoeuvres, Side Collision Warning, and Crossing Traffic Warning, provide more intuitive and unobtrusive support compared to the current generation’s already capable but less advanced suite.
Overall, the fifth-generation X5 builds on the current model’s strengths in luxury, space, and versatility while introducing groundbreaking electrification options, faster vehicle intelligence, and refined dynamics. These changes reflect BMW’s strategy to future-proof the X5 lineup amid tightening emissions regulations and shifting consumer preferences, offering South African buyers (where the Spartanburg-built vehicles have strong appeal) greater choice and cutting-edge technology. The new model is expected to maintain the X5’s reputation for blending performance with practicality, now with even broader appeal across powertrain types.
