The New BMW 7 Series: A Bold New Chapter for the Luxury Flagship
World Premiere: 22 April 2026 | Production Start: July 2026 | South Africa Market Launch: Q4 2026
The BMW 7 Series has been many things across its 49-year history, a statement of engineering ambition, a rolling laboratory for future technology, and the undisputed flagship of one of the world’s most iconic automotive brands. With the seventh generation, revealed at its global world premiere today – 22 April 2026, BMW has done something it has never done before: used the 7 Series as the launchpad for an entirely new technology architecture.
This is the first luxury sedan to carry technologies from the Neue Klasse, BMW’s next-generation vehicle platform, and it represents the most extensive model update in BMW Group history.
What that means in practice is a car that does not simply evolve from its predecessor, but one that begins an entirely new technological conversation. Every future BMW will eventually benefit from what the 7 Series pioneers here, making this generation a pivotal moment not just for a single model, but for an entire brand.
A Design That Commands the Room

The exterior of the new 7 Series is an unapologetic statement. BMW calls it monolithic — a single, cohesive presence that makes no attempt to break itself into smaller individual design and visual stories. The defining elements of the front end are the new BMW kidney Iconic Glow, which illuminates the signature double-kidney grille in a way that is unmistakable in any light, and the new minimalist crystal headlights, which replace visual complexity with jewel-like precision.
The side profile is defined by reduced, clean surfaces, a deliberate move away from the surfacing drama that has characterised many recent luxury rivals. High-quality details and a single character line lend the flanks a sense of considered restraint that feels genuinely expensive rather than merely large. At the rear, newly designed lights complete a form that reads as resolved and authoritative from every angle.
Personalisation options are remarkable in their scope. Over 500 colour and colour combination choices are available, including finishes from the BMW Individual range. The headline addition is BMW Individual Dual-Finish paintwork, a world first combining advanced technology and expert craftsmanship that BMW describes as the pinnacle of what is currently achievable in automotive paintwork. Wheels are available from 20 to 22 inches, with 22-inch rims offered as an ex-factory option for the first time, and 21-inch run-flat tyres that will be standard in the South African specification.
An Interior That Redefines the Cabin Experience

The inside of the new 7 Series makes an immediate argument for why interior design in a luxury car should be led by technology without being consumed by it. The centrepiece of the cabin is the new BMW Panoramic iDrive system, built on BMW Operating System X and encompasses five distinct display and interaction layers working in concert.
The 17.9-inch Central Display commands the centre of the dashboard in a free-cut design with matrix backlight technology. Above the instrument cluster, the BMW Panoramic Vision projects content across the entire lower windscreen area so that driving information sits in the driver’s eye-line, while customisable widgets visible to all occupants can be arranged via a simple drag-and-drop function on the touchscreen. Layered above that again, the BMW 3D Head-Up Display provides the driver with spatially precise navigation and assistance data without requiring eye movement away from the road. The new multifunction steering wheel features shy tech controls that illuminate only when needed, providing haptic feedback for infotainment without visual clutter.
Front Passenger Video Screen Incorporated
The most significant debut is the standard-fitted BMW Passenger Screen, a 14.6-inch full-HD display for the front passenger that enables video streaming, gaming, TV programmes, video calls, and music playback while the car is in motion. An integrated visibility shield function uses the interior camera to detect if the driver’s attention has drifted toward the screen and darkens it automatically. The upgraded BMW Theatre Screen for rear passengers remains one of the most compelling features in any automobile: a 31.3-inch 8K touchscreen equipped with a camera for video conferencing, integrated sun-blinds that close automatically when the screen activates, and Bowers & Wilkins surround sound with Dolby Atmos support — up to 36 speakers in total.
Standard equipment for the South African market to include a panoramic glass roof with Sky Lounge, four-zone automatic climate control, a Bowers & Wilkins sound system, comfort seats, and the Travel & Comfort System.
Powertrain: Technology Openness in Practice
The new 7 Series offers the most comprehensive powertrain range in its segment, demonstrating BMW’s technology openness philosophy across six variants at launch.
*With Launch Control activated. | All figures provisional, based on German market WLTP data.
The headline story in the electric range is the BMW i7’s use of sixth-generation BMW eDrive cylindrical cells, the same Neue Klasse battery technology that will underpin future BMW models. This is housed in a 112.5 kWh high-voltage battery. The result is a WLTP range of up to 728 kilometres, a charging rate of 250 kW enabling a 10–80% charge in just 28 minutes, and an additional 235 km of range recoverable from just 10 minutes of DC charging. An intelligent energy market integration feature allows for automatic scheduling of charging at times based on potential future lower electricity tariffs (Where these exist).
Driving Dynamics and AI-Assisted Safety
Standard on all variants is adaptive two-axle air suspension with individually electronically controlled dampers. This is a genuinely sophisticated system that allows the 7 Series to serve both the driver who enjoys the car and the passenger who prefers to be chauffeured. Optional Adaptive Chassis Control Professional adds Integral Active Steering and active roll stabilisation for a further tier of refinement.
The new BMW Symbiotic Drive is one of the most thoughtful assistance developments in recent memory. Rather than forcing the driver to disengage an assistance system to make a spontaneous steering, braking, or acceleration input, Symbiotic Drive allows natural driver intervention without cancellation. The optional Motorway Assistant enables hands-free motorway driving up to 130 km/h with eye-signal-confirmed automated lane changes. The new City Assistant which is guided by AI and a high-resolution digital map, provides address-to-address assistance through urban environments, managing traffic lights, roundabouts, lane changes, and priority situations with a natural driving character.
Standard active safety features have been meaningfully expanded from its predecessor, including the AI-powered Park Assist Professional with autonomous parking space detection and manoeuvre planning, Crossing Traffic Warning with automatic emergency braking, Side Collision Warning with steering intervention, and a new exit warning system.
Sustainability by Design
BMW’s sustainability commitments are embedded into the 7 Series across its full lifecycle. The Gen6 battery cells in the BMW i7 are manufactured using electricity from renewable sources and incorporate secondary materials for lithium, cobalt, and nickel. From 2026, the BMW i7’s alloy wheel rims consist of 70% recycled aluminium. Production at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, where all variants are built on a single production line, is powered in part by a 100,000 square metre rooftop photovoltaic system and a biomass heating plant.
A Flagship That Carries the Future
The new BMW 7 Series is a rare thing: a mid-cycle model update that is genuinely transformative. By introducing Neue Klasse technology into an existing nameplate, BMW has compressed the gap between its current portfolio and its next generation. For buyers, this means Sheer Driving Pleasure at its most technologically sophisticated. For the industry, it means the bar for what a luxury sedan can offer in digital experience, electric range, driving intelligence, and craftsmanship, has been raised again.
South African customers can expect the new BMW 7 Series to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2026. The wait, on this evidence, should be well worth it.
Note: All technical data is provisional and relates to the German market. South African specification may vary. Figures correct at time of world premiere, 22 April 2026.
