Imagine working tirelessly for an entire year without receiving a salary—the stress and anxiety this would cause you and your loved ones. This is the harsh reality many entrepreneurs face in their quest to build successful businesses. Reflecting on a personal entrepreneurial journey reveals a failure that, while haunting, is rich with lessons for aspiring business owners, particularly emphasizing the importance of seeking advice.

Liberation vs. Liability

Nontokozo Madonsela, the CMO of Momentum Metropolitan Holdings embarked on this journey by purchasing an existing business and rebranding it as Spa88. Entering the market with a solid strategy and a passion for customer service, they felt confident. With a successful track record in establishing and growing major brands, they were driven by determination and faith, cashing in their pension fund and shares to pursue their dreams. The desire for creative and physical liberation from corporate life fuelled this venture. The aim was to innovate within the beauty and luxury spa industry.

This experience highlighted the significant frustration that funding can bring, therefore she advises others to always seek alternative funding sources, especially for those over 30, as the risk of falling behind in retirement goals is substantial.

Passion vs. Profit

Balancing passion with business objectives is crucial for any entrepreneur. The same dedication given to providing excellent client experiences must be applied to maintaining the business. Despite having a great strategy and sound business plan, financial management posed significant challenges. The seasonality of the spa business was underestimated, leading to financial strain. Conversations about risk were lacking, such as protecting against liabilities from adverse client reactions to treatments or theft.

Networking emerged as another critical component of success. Building relationships within the community ensures that other businesses and potential clients are aware of one’s presence. Staying informed about industry developments and trends is equally important.

Optimism vs. Advice

Self-belief and confidence in one’s idea are essential. However, it is easy to become closed off to caution or differing opinions. Few people can offer objective truth, and those close may be inclined to offer support rather than critical feedback. Investing in independent expert advice is invaluable.

Madonsela mentions that entering an unfamiliar industry was a significant oversight for her. Hiring a specialist or consultant could have mitigated many risks. A financial adviser can provide crucial insights to protect both the entrepreneur and the business. The difficulty of separating personal finances from business funds, coupled with operating expenses like rent and wages for six employees, led to high stress and anxiety.

These challenges were compounded by a divorce, increasing the pressure to support Madonsela’s children. After three years of hard work, the Madonsela had to walk away from the business. This decision was difficult and the loss was deeply felt amidst personal turmoil.

Despite the setbacks, Madonsela’s spirit remains strong. With newfound wisdom and knowledge, a different path may be pursued in the future. The importance of seeking and using expert advice is a lesson that will guide future endeavours.

Competitions like Momentum’s “Big Success for Entrepreneurs” offer more than just funding. They provide access to quality advice essential for success. Nominations for deserving entrepreneurs or personal entries can win a share of a R1-million cash prize, along with expert financial advice and business coaching.

African businesses may find a more practical use for stablecoins

Bitcoin is still the first thing that comes to mind when crypto is mentioned. But for an African business that needs to pay a supplier in another country, receive money from an overseas customer or move dollars between markets, Bitcoin is not always the obvious choice. Stablecoins could be more useful. Dollar backed stablecoins are
