The Dayun Yuehu S5: Enviro Automotive Launches SA’s Most Affordable Electric Car

Enviro Automotive has introduced the Dayun Yuehu S5 to the South African market, making it the most affordable electric vehicle (EV) in the country. Priced at just R399,900, the Dayun Yuehu S5 undercuts its nearest competitor, the BYD Dolphin, by over R100,000.

This competitive pricing positions the Dayun Yuehu S5 within the reach of a broader audience, especially considering that many new cars in South Africa fall within the R300,000 to R400,000 price range. The launch of this affordable EV is expected to significantly boost the adoption of electric vehicles in the country, as more consumers will be able to make the switch to electric mobility.

Dayun, a Chinese company originally focused on motorcycles and commercial vehicles, expanded into the electric car market with the launch of the first iteration of the Yuehu S5 in 2017. The latest model, the Dayun Yuehu S5, is a compact battery-electric SUV equipped with a front-mounted 35kW synchronous permanent magnet AC electric motor, delivering 105Nm of peak torque through a single-speed gearbox.

The Yuehu S5 boasts a 31.7kWh ternary lithium-ion battery, offering a claimed range of 330km, which is ideal for daily commutes. It supports both AC and DC charging, allowing for convenient home charging or quick recharges at DC fast-charging stations. The vehicle has a claimed energy consumption of 10.7kWh per 100km. Recharging with a standard 220V outlet takes about four hours, while a DC fast charger can replenish the battery from 20% to 80% in less than an hour.

The Dayun Yuehu S5 mini-SUV is available in two options:

• Dayun Yuehu S5 VIP: R449,900

The car comes with a three-year or 60,000km warranty and service plan, which includes roadside assistance. The battery warranty extends to five years or 120,000km, with service intervals set at every 12 months or 20,000km.
