In a bid to accelerate the adoption of solar energy in Spain, Barcelona-based startup SolarMente is introducing a subscription-based model for solar panel installations. Spain, despite its abundant sunshine, lags behind in domestic solar panel installations, a situation partially attributed to a historical “sun tax” that was only abolished in 2018. SolarMente aims to seize this opportunity and make solar installations a common feature on Spanish rooftops.

SolarMente was founded by CEO Wouter Draijer and Victor Gardrinier, who was inspired to start the company after noticing the limited presence of solar panels on Spanish rooftops compared to his home country, the Netherlands. Initially, SolarMente began as a solar panel installer in Spain but shifted its focus post-pandemic to offer a comprehensive solar energy management system.

Recognizing that the falling cost of solar panels and specialized companies covering panel installations could make DIY efforts more attractive, SolarMente opted to provide subscription-based energy management services. This approach eliminates the need for upfront costs and resonates with consumers who are more interested in the benefits of solar panels rather than ownership.

SolarMente’s services include installing solar panels without any upfront expenses. Instead of targeting apartment dwellers, the startup concentrates on individual houses for easier regulatory compliance and greater market potential. Draijer emphasizes that SolarMente goes beyond solar panel installations, offering additional services such as analyzing customer data, integrating battery and electric vehicle (EV) chargers, and managing overall energy consumption.

To further support its expansion and development of a super app for home energy management, SolarMente recently secured investment from actor Leonardo DiCaprio. This marks DiCaprio’s first investment in Spain, aligning with his track record of supporting sustainability-focused ventures. SolarMente aims to optimize energy consumption for homeowners through its app, enabling them to make informed decisions about when to consume or sell the energy generated by their solar panels.

Victor Gardrinier, SolarMente’s co-founder, highlighted the importance of energy management due to the arbitrage between buying energy from the grid and selling excess energy back to the grid. SolarMente’s approach goes beyond full-on trading, intending to empower homeowners to maximize the benefits of their solar panels through optimized energy consumption.

DiCaprio’s investment is part of SolarMente’s larger seed round of equity financing, focused on advancing the development of its super app for home energy management. As SolarMente seeks to raise a Series A, the actor’s endorsement and financial support position the startup for significant strides in revolutionizing solar energy adoption in Spain. The startup’s subscription-based model and commitment to democratizing solar energy align with broader efforts to address fluctuating energy prices and contribute to the country’s transition toward sustainable energy solutions.
