Rhino Resources Advances Drilling and Testing in Namibia’s Orange Basin
Rhino Resources is preparing to launch a new drilling and testing campaign in its PEL 85 offshore block, located in Namibia’s Orange Basin. The initiative aims to confirm the commercial potential of the company’s oil and condensate gas discoveries before transitioning into the development phase.
According to a company statement released on Friday, October 24, Rhino Resources plans to drill an appraisal well on the Capricornus prospect, where earlier exploration indicated signs of light oil. In addition, the company will conduct a flow test on the Volans prospect, which has recently been confirmed to contain liquid-rich condensate gas.
With the two prospects situated approximately nine miles apart, Rhino Resources is exploring the possibility of a joint development plan to optimize resources and infrastructure.
Strategic Evaluation Before Investment
Rhino Resources’ CEO told Reuters that the company is proceeding carefully to determine the most effective development strategy.
“There’s a fair amount of uncertainty at this stage, not because of the quality of discoveries, but because we have such optionality on our hands. We want to make sure we make the right decision for the right reason,” the CEO said.
This evaluation phase is critical for gathering the technical and geological data needed to inform a Final Investment Decision. Key tests will analyze pressure, temperature, and fluid composition to refine reservoir models and estimate recoverable hydrocarbon volumes.
The 2030 Production Plan
If results from the appraisal and testing phases prove favorable, and with government approvals in place, Rhino Resources aims to begin production around 2030. The proposed development concept will likely utilize Floating Production, Storage and Offloading vessels offshore platforms that allow crude oil to be produced, stored, and offloaded directly at sea.
This model has become increasingly popular in the Orange Basin, mirroring successful large-scale offshore developments by other major energy players.
