Omoda expands South African lineup with C5 Super Hybrid System

Omoda and Jaecoo will introduce the C5 Super Hybrid System to the South African market, adding a petrol-electric option to its best-selling local model. The rollout follows a recent update to the C5 range and reflects the brand’s effort to deepen its footprint in the compact sport utility vehicle segment, where the model has built steady demand since launch.

From a technical perspective, the C5 Super Hybrid System combines a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with a single electric motor and a 1.83 kWh battery. Together, the system delivers 165 kW and 310 N.m of torque, driving the front wheels through a dedicated hybrid transmission. Omoda lists average fuel consumption at 5.3 L/100 km, with a combined driving range of 1,000 km. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is quoted at 7.9 seconds.

Launch timing, pricing and specification

Locally, Omoda has scheduled the hybrid C5 for a March 2026 launch in South Africa. Pricing remains undisclosed, although the model is expected to sit at the top of the C5 range, which currently retails between R339,900 and R465,900. This positioning places the hybrid alongside higher-specification variants rather than as a volume seller.

In terms of equipment, standard specification includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, paired with 12.3-inch digital instrumentation. An eight-speaker audio system and electric tailgate are fitted as standard, while blind-spot monitoring and lane change assist form part of the driver assistance package. The C5 Super Hybrid System also features model-specific alloy wheels.
